* fix(hdfs): report earlier write failures and log cleanup failures
- Later `write`/`close` calls on a writer whose failed write was
cleaned up now mention the original failure instead of the bare
"unavailable after close or abort" message.
- `abort_and_delete` logs abort and deletion failures with the
temporary path instead of discarding them; the original write error
is still returned to the caller.
- The temporary-file cleanup test now lists the directory holding the
temporary file, so it fails if the cleanup is reverted.

* fix(promql): honor @ modifier on subqueries (#9446)
* fix(promql): honor @ modifier on subqueries
`prom_subquery_expr_to_plan` never read the `at` field of a subquery, so
`sum_over_time(m[20s:10s] @ 60)` was evaluated like `m[20s:10s]` and
followed the outer evaluation grid.
Handle `@` the way Prometheus does: fold the anchor into the subquery
offset (`offset + (eval_start - anchor)`, as `setOffsetForAtModifier`
does), evaluate the subquery once at the start of the evaluation, and
replay the folded window over the outer grid, reusing the anchored
range selector machinery. A call whose range argument is an anchored
subquery is promoted as step-invariant, like one over an anchored range
selector. `@ start()`/`@ end()` and `offset` combine as for selectors,
and an unrepresentable anchor is rejected with the existing error.

subquery, a computed inner expression, and an aggregation above the
anchored call. Two series per table so a dropped or merged series
shows up as a wrong row.

* fix(mito2): validate bulk insert batches against the region schema (#9698)
* fix(mito2): validate bulk insert batches against the region schema
Bulk inserts were only checked for the time index column, unlike row
writes, which WriteRequest::check_schema checks against the region
schema. A batch with columns of another type, nulls in the time index or
in non-nullable columns, duplicate or unknown columns reached the region
worker: a time index that is not a timestamp or holds only nulls made
the worker fail, and other mismatches failed after the WAL append or
were stored as written, depending on the SST format.
Move the column checks of check_schema into a core shared by row writes
and bulk inserts, and check bulk insert batches at the same points as
rows: when the engine builds the worker request, and again in the worker
if the region schema changed since. check_schema keeps its behavior.
Bulk insert columns must have the column's Arrow type, except that tags
may use any string encoding, as the memtables already convert them.
Sparse batches must carry one encoded primary key column of binary
without nulls. A batch that misses columns gets them filled by the
worker even if it claims to match the current schema.
The metric engine checks logical bulk inserts against the logical region
before rewriting them into the physical region, as the rewrite copies
columns without checking them and would encode a duplicated tag into the
primary key twice.

* fix(mito2): fence writes before a graceful downgrade (#9716)
* test(mito2): cover graceful role changes racing with writes
A graceful role change flips the region state in a background task while
the worker keeps handling writes. Add bulk and row write tests that check a
write handled after the role change request is either rejected or covered
by the returned last_entry_id.
Add tests for DowngradingLeader while an ALTER keeps the region in
Altering, alone and in the downgrade sequence the datanode runs
(DowngradingLeader, Flush, Follower) with a migration candidate on its own
local WAL. Add a test that the downgrade sequence covers a write in flight
when a lease renewal sets Downgrading.
Signed-off-by: jeremyhi <fengjiachun@gmail.com>
* fix(mito2): fence writes before a graceful downgrade
set_region_role_state_gracefully hands the role change to a background task
that waits for the manifest lock. The worker keeps handling writes until the
task flips the state, so a write could be acknowledged with an entry id above
the returned last_entry_id. Set Downgrading in the worker before spawning the
task for Follower and DowngradingLeader requests, as lease renewal already
does, so every write the worker handles afterwards is rejected.
DowngradingLeader also did nothing and returned success when the region was
in another leader state such as Altering. The region became writable again
when the operation finished, and the datanode then flushed and turned it
into a follower in one step. Return a retryable error instead, so metasrv
retries the downgrade.
Signed-off-by: jeremyhi <fengjiachun@gmail.com>
* test(mito2): assert the retryable downgrade error during ALTER
Check that DowngradingLeader during an ALTER returns a retryable error, and
release the paused ALTER on that path. The local WAL test now retries the
downgrade after the ALTER, as metasrv does.

* test(mito2): write before the retried downgrade in the local WAL test

* fix(meta): validate persisted partition bounds before altering regions (#9487)
* fix(meta): validate persisted partition bounds before altering regions
A partition bound is persisted with the type of the column at the time
it was written. When an ALTER TABLE changes the type of a column
referenced by a partition expression (widening the time index unit is
the common case), each region rewrites the bound literal to the new
type while building its scan predicate. A millisecond bound like year
3000 fits milliseconds but overflows nanoseconds, so every scan of the
region fails once the table schema is updated -- and some regions may
already be altered when the failure surfaces.
Validate every region's persisted expression on prepare, before any
region is modified: parse the persisted JSON (mirrored types, since
common-meta cannot depend on the partition crate which depends on it),
replay the same value -> ScalarValue conversion and checked cast the
region performs, and reject the ALTER naming the offending region when
a bound cannot be represented with the new column type. Incompatible
changes are rejected atomically; compatible widening proceeds unchanged.
Adds meta-level tests (multi-region rejection naming the second region,
compatible widening completing) and an end-to-end sqlness case.

* fix(meta): compare partition bounds with the scan comparison coercion
The preflight validator cast the persisted bound directly to the altered
column type, which rejected ALTERs the scan itself accepts: the region
coerces both the column and the bound to the common comparison type
(ExprSimplifier::coerce in PredicateGroup::new), so narrowing a field
column with an out-of-range bound still scans. Compare through
comparison_coercion(target_type, bound_type) instead and only require the
bound to be castable to the common type.
Also add a round-trip test in the partition crate that serializes real
PartitionExprs and runs them through the validator, so drift between the
Persisted* mirror and the partition types fails CI, and fix the error
message to match the comparison semantics.

* fix(meta): reject every non-widening type change of a partitioned column
The region routes rows on write through `MultiDimPartitionRule::find_region`,
which compares the persisted bound against row values directly: `Value::cmp`
panics on mismatched variants and equality misroutes silently. After a column
partitioned at `v < 3000000000` is altered from BIGINT to INT, every INSERT
compares `Value::Int32` rows against the persisted `Value::Int64` bound and
panics in the frontend, even though the scan-side coercion this check mirrors
still works.
Reject any type change of a column referenced by a persisted partition
expression unless it is a timestamp unit widening, which keeps the bound and
the rows comparable because `Timestamp` comparisons convert units first; the
widening keeps the scan cast check unchanged.

* fix(mito2): re-check a filled write as sent after a schema change (#9701)
* fix(mito2): re-check a filled write as sent after a schema change
The engine fills the columns a write leaves out with their defaults when it
accepts the write, appending them to the rows without adding them to
`name_to_index` and `has_null`. If the region schema changes before the
worker handles the write, the worker checks the request again and
`check_schema` looks up a filled column in `name_to_index`, which panics and
stops the region worker. If the filled column was dropped, the write fails
with an unknown column that the client never sent.
Remove the filled columns before checking, so the request is checked as sent
and filled again for the current schema. Nothing is filled yet when the
engine checks the request, so that check does no extra work.

* fix(mito2): keep SSTs when a manifest save ends with RateLimited or PermissionDenied (#9898)
* fix(mito2): keep SSTs when a manifest save ends with RateLimited
The object store's retry layer retries temporary errors and returns the
last attempt's error. A manifest delta PUT can be stored by the server
while the client sees a timeout, reset or 5xx, and the retries that
follow can be throttled, so the save ends with RateLimited even though
the delta exists. may_have_persisted_manifest_update treated RateLimited
as proof that nothing was written, so flush and compaction deleted the
SSTs the stored delta references. A later open or follower sync replays
the delta and reads fail on the missing files.
Treat RateLimited like other ambiguous errors: the SSTs are kept and
become orphans when the save really failed.

* fix(mito2): keep SSTs when a manifest save ends with PermissionDenied
The retry layer returns the last attempt's error, so a 403 from a revoked
key, a changed bucket policy or clock skew can follow a delta PUT that
the server already stored. Like RateLimited, PermissionDenied does not
prove that nothing was written, so it no longer lets flush or compaction
delete the SSTs; they become orphans when the save really failed.
The compaction test that rejects a manifest write before persistence now
injects Unsupported, which is raised before any request is sent.

* fix(query): pin DataFusion cast constraint propagation fix
Update the pinned GreptimeTeam/datafusion revision from e3221b8 to
cc55344 (the 55.1 fork carrying apache/datafusion#25531 plus a stronger
regression test).
CastExpr::propagate_constraints used to cast a filter's output interval
straight back to the input type. For CAST(k AS BIGINT) = 1 the singleton
output [1, 1] was inverted to [1.0, 1.0] although k = 1.5 matches too, so
FilterExec advertised k as constant, the equivalence classes dropped the
ordering required by ORDER BY k, and rows returned in scan order.
The sqlness case keeps every #9600 assertion and the explicit ORDER BY,
and adds ascending and descending checks for the partitioned table, the
control table and a table whose matching rows are stored in neither
ascending nor descending k order.
Cargo.lock only rewrites the 35 datafusion source lines.

* fix(promql): apply offset to subquery evaluation window (#9364)
* fix(promql): apply offset to subquery evaluation window
`prom_subquery_expr_to_plan` destructured `SubqueryExpr` without reading
`offset`, so `<subquery>[range:step] offset <d>` planned exactly the same
window as the un-offset form and silently returned data for the wrong time
range. The plain vector/matrix-selector paths already threaded the offset
through `selector_to_series_normalize_plan` and `RangeManipulate`.
Shift the inner evaluation window back by the offset and pass the offset to
the subquery's `RangeManipulate`, which maps the inner samples forward onto
the evaluation timeline before bucketing them into ranges. This matches
Prometheus, whose `evaluator.subqueryTimeRange` evaluates the inner
expression over `(start - offset - range, end - offset]` and whose
`evalSubquery` then hands the samples to the outer range-vector function as
a `MatrixSelector` that still carries the subquery offset. An offset on the
inner selector composes additively, as `subqueryTimes` documents.
`RangeManipulate`'s protobuf message has no offset field and recovers it on
decode from an immediately underlying `SeriesNormalize`. Since
`RangeManipulate` is commutative in `dist_plan` and can be pushed below a
`MergeScan`, insert that carrier node so the offset survives distributed
planning instead of decoding as zero.
Known divergence, unchanged by this commit: Prometheus anchors subquery step
points on absolute epoch multiples of the step, while GreptimeDB anchors them
on the evaluation start. The two agree whenever the offset is a multiple of
the subquery step; the added sqlness cases stay within that range.

* docs(promql): correct the subquery-offset rationale and pin the histogram shift
Follow-up to e132c267, which stated two things inaccurately and left one
path untested. No behaviour change beyond a conditional clone.
The `SeriesNormalize` carrier was described as existing "so the offset
survives distributed planning", implying standalone is unaffected. That is
wrong. `local_offset` is read on the substrait decode path
(`range_manipulate.rs`, `instant_manipulate.rs`), and GreptimeDB routes
PromQL plans through `MergeScan`/substrait in standalone too -- the
standalone results `promql/encode_substrait.result` and `precisions.result`
both show `MergeScan [is_placeholder=false, remote_input=[...]]`. Deleting
the carrier therefore empties subquery-with-offset results in standalone as
well, while `count_over_time_subquery_with_offset` keeps passing because it
asserts the pre-serialization plan. Say so at the node, so the next reader
does not remove it believing standalone is safe.
The carrier is also not semantically inert: `SeriesNormalizeStream::normalize`
shifts native histogram `start_timestamp` payloads by `offset`. On the
subquery path that runs on a computed inner result, on top of any offset the
inner selector already applied, and nothing pinned it. It is consistent --
`RangeManipulate` moves the millisecond time index forward by the same
`offset_ms` -- so the distance from a histogram's start timestamp to the
sample carrying it, which reset/rate detection reads, is invariant. Add
`subquery_offset_shifts_histogram_start_and_time_index_together`, which
executes the subquery's node stack over native histogram samples for a
zero and a non-zero inner offset. It cannot be a sqlness case: native
histograms are a struct column with no SQL type or literal
(`sql_data_type_to_concrete_data_type` rejects structs) and the sqlness
runner speaks only MySQL/Postgres, so such rows only arrive over
gRPC/remote-write v2.
The divergence note blamed sub-step offsets. Measured, that condition is too
narrow: an unaligned evaluation timestamp alone diverges, with no offset at
all -- `sum_over_time(fine[20s:10s])` at t=57 samples 47s and 57s here
against Prometheus's 40s and 50s. The real condition is that
`(start - offset)` is not a multiple of the subquery step, and it is
pre-existing: the committed `tql eval (359, 359, '1s')
sum_over_time(metric_total[60s:10s])` case is already an instance of it
(`359 - 60 + 10 = 309`). Reword the comment and the sqlness header
accordingly. A sub-step offset stays accepted: `foo[20s:10s] offset 5s` is
valid PromQL, erroring on it would be a regression and would not close the
gap anyway. This repo has no PromQL-compatibility documentation page, so
there is nowhere else to record it.
Also stop cloning the series key columns when there is no offset, and stop
the `offset 0s` sqlness comment implying its parser error is evidence about
this fix -- the same message comes from a `u32` overflow in
`promql-parser`'s shared duration check (`offset 9999999999d`).

* fix(promql): align timestamp(), label_join and label_replace with Prometheus semantics (#9385)
* fix(promql): align timestamp() and label_join with Prometheus semantics
- timestamp() over a selector reports the selected sample's timestamp, without adding the offset.
- timestamp() over any other expression reports the evaluation time instead of the input value.
- label_join that overwrites an existing label rejects duplicate label sets at runtime.

* fix(promql): align label_replace and label_join edge cases with Prometheus
- label_replace leaves non-matching series unchanged instead of copying the source value into the destination label.
- label_replace may overwrite an existing label; duplicate label sets are rejected at runtime like label_join.
- label_join with no source labels removes the destination label, and an empty source label name is rejected.
- Empty label values produced by these functions are NULL, the same as an absent label.

* fix(promql): join absent labels as empty strings in label_join
concat_ws skips NULL arguments together with their separator, so a label that is absent (NULL) dropped its separator, e.g. label_join(label_join(vector(1), "a", "", "missing"), "b", "-", "a", "a") lost b="-". Read every source label as coalesce(label, '') like label_replace does.

* ci: make query regression non-blocking for scheduled nightly releases (#9434)
* ci: make query regression non-blocking for scheduled nightly releases
Scheduled nightly releases no longer gate publishing on the query
regression release test. The test still runs (validation policy stays
'all' for automatic releases) and uploads its report, but any result -
failure, timeout, cancellation, or skip - no longer blocks image
publishing or the GitHub release for schedule-triggered runs.
Since reusable-workflow caller jobs cannot use continue-on-error, the
gate is relaxed at the consumers instead: the if conditions of
release-images-to-dockerhub and publish-github-release now also pass
when github.event_name == 'schedule' regardless of the query-regression
result. All other gates (runner allocation, artifact builds,
prepare-release-validation) are unchanged.
Tag-push and manual-dispatch releases remain fully blocking unless a
skip policy is explicitly chosen via the release_validation input.

* fix(operator): bound FlowMirrorTask pending rows to prevent frontend OOM (#9421)
* fix(operator): bound FlowMirrorTask pending rows to prevent frontend OOM
When flownode is slow or unreachable, FlowMirrorTask::detach spawns
unbounded tasks that each pin a full insert batch for ~10s (gRPC
timeout). With continuous writes, in-flight memory grows unboundedly
(throughput x 10s x peers), causing frontend-write OOMKill and a
million-per-hour ERROR storm.
Add a MAX_MIRROR_PENDING_ROWS cap (1M rows) on Inserter: detach
fetch_adds the batch's row count before spawning; if the cap is
exceeded the reservation is rolled back, the batch is dropped, a
DIST_MIRROR_DROPPED_ROW_COUNT metric is bumped, and a warn is logged
instead of spawning. On normal completion the reservation is released
in both success and error paths.
This keeps core writes alive while degrading flow mirror writes to
best-effort, which is the intended trade-off: protect the primary
insert path at the cost of possible flow aggregation gaps.

* fix: address review - balanced reservation, gauge race, log rate limit
P1: Compute pending_rows() from actual per-peer payloads in
self.requests instead of the pre-fanout num_rows field. This fixes
under-reservation for same-table multi-region batches and over-release
in multi-flownode fanout. Each peer task now releases exactly its own
share so reservations and releases balance.
P2: Replace load+set gauge publication with add/sub symmetry.
reserve_mirror_pending_rows does fetch_add + gauge.add, release does
fetch_update + gauge.sub, eliminating the stale-value race.
P3: Rate-limit the dropped-batch warning to at most once per 10s via
MirrorDropLog (atomic compare_exchange), accumulating batch/row counts
between reports.

* test: fix race in dual-peer test - wait for gauge release before unlocking
The dual-peer test previously only waited for the pending budget to
return to its start value before releasing MIRROR_METRIC_TEST_LOCK.
But release_mirror_pending_rows moves the budget before the gauge, so
a worker's gauge.sub could still be in flight when the next test
acquires the lock and records its baseline, polluting the result.
Now waits for both pending == start AND gauge == gauge_before.

* fix(promql): keep vector labels when a computed scalar is on the right (#9478)
* fix(promql): keep vector labels when a computed scalar is on the right
`metric + time()` or `metric * scalar(other)` planned the join with the
scalar side's context, which has no tags, so every series collapsed into

* test(promql): cover label_replace normalization with distinct series (#9485)
The duplicate-label-set rejection must not fire when a label rewrite keeps
every series distinct through another label. Normalizing mixed histogram
boundary representations (`10.0` -> `10`) while `instance` still differs is
the false positive reported in #9444. The check already accounts for it
since it became a per-timestamp row count instead of a planning-time
rejection, but no fixture covered the positive case. Add one, together
with the aggregation variant that produces a genuine duplicate and must
still fail.

* fix(promql): keep metric name for comparison operators (#9332)
* fix(promql): keep metric name for comparison operators
`collect_metric_names` dropped the response `__name__` for every binary
operator except `and` / `or` / `unless`, so comparisons such as
`node_load1 > 5` came back without the metric name. Grafana rendered them
as `{instance="..."}` and alert templates reading `$labels.__name__` got
nothing.
Follow Prometheus' `shouldDropMetricName` / `resultMetric`: arithmetic
operators drop the name, comparisons keep the left-hand name, except when
the comparison returns a bool or is a one-to-one `on(...)` match. A
`group_left` / `group_right` modifier does not reduce the labels, so the
name is kept there.
Both the HTTP PromQL API and the gRPC gateway share
`retrieve_metric_name_and_result_type`, so one fix covers both.

* perf(promql): reduce timestamp payload allocations and use narrow cursor scans (#9417)
* perf(promql): zero-copy timestamp payload for millisecond zero-offset ranges
RangeManipulate rebuilt the timestamp range payload per sample through
wide-precision i128 conversion even for millisecond input with zero
offset, where the input is already millisecond and nothing changes.
That turned a previously zero-copy path into a per-sample loop plus a
Vec allocation, regressing range-function queries.
Reuse the input timestamp array directly when the time index is already
millisecond and the offset is zero. Other units and non-zero offsets
keep the wide-precision conversion (required so ns/us data near the
native type limits stays correct under large offsets).

* perf(promql): vectorize timestamp payload with plain i64
RangeManipulate rebuilt the timestamp range payload per sample through
wide-precision i128 conversion, turning a hot path into a scalar loop
with a Vec allocation. Realistic timestamps and offsets stay far inside
i64, so the wide path is unnecessary.
- millisecond + zero offset reuses the input array with zero copy;
- other units / offsets shift in one vectorized i64 pass (no i128, no
per-sample Option, no overflow branch).

* perf(promql): check timestamp payload overflow via arrow try_unary
Replace the silent wrapping shift with try_unary + checked_mul/checked_add.
checked arithmetic lowers to a per-lane overflow flag so the single pass
still vectorizes over the dense i64 buffer; any overflow short-circuits to
an error instead of silently wrapping to a wrong timestamp. No i128, no
per-sample Option.

* perf(promql): vectorize cursor scans with i64 fast path
RangeManipulate::calculate_range and InstantManipulate::manipulate
compared every sample through i128 wide-precision arithmetic. For
realistic timestamps and offsets the shifted values stay far inside
i64, so the wide path was pure overhead.
Split both scans into an i64 fast path (checked arithmetic precomputed
once per batch) and an i128 exact fallback. Any input that would
overflow i64 falls back to the i128 scan, keeping window membership
semantics identical.
Verified: 47/47 range_manipulate + instant_manipulate tests, 275/275
promql crate tests, 1612 randomized cases byte-identical to i128 scan.

* refactor(promql): generalize cursor scans and share endpoint precheck
Address review comments on PR #9417:
- Generalize scan_ranges/scan_instants over Nanoseconds (i64/i128),
eliminating the duplicated scan bodies.
- Extract shared narrow_scan precheck used by both RangeManipulate and
InstantManipulate, with identical checked endpoint logic.
- Trim doc comments to one line; fix factual errors about fallback
trigger (2262 for ms/s, not native type limits).
Semantics unchanged: same cursor algorithm, same overflow fallback,
same i64-vs-i128 selection, same stale/null/tie handling.
Verified: 47/47 range_manipulate + instant_manipulate tests, clippy clean.

* perf(promql): vectorize payload with try_unary and add scan carrier bench
Replace the per-sample i128 payload loop with a single arrow try_unary
pass: i128 intermediate holds any native timestamp shift, only the final
millisecond result must fit i64. This is semantically equivalent to the
original i128 implementation (no silent wrap, no per-sample branching).
Add cursor_scan_carriers A/B benchmark: i64 fast path vs i128 exact
fallback on four workloads. Add five deterministic differential tests
pinning scan_ranges::<i64> and scan_ranges::<i128> to be pointwise
equivalent on boundary shapes (sub-ms samples, fallback triggers,
nanosecond extremes, seeded precision matrix).
Bench (N=4096, 15s cadence):
- payload wall_time 20x15s: 74.94us -> 48.98us (-35%)
- payload wall_time 240x15s: 102.44us
- scan i64 fast path: 10.97us vs i128 19.84us (1.81x)
Signed-off-by: discord9 <55937128+discord9@users.noreply.github.com>
* perf(promql): restore zero-copy payload for ms+offset=0 and fix comment
Restore the zero-copy fast path for millisecond timestamps with zero
offset, guarded by the input column's exact data type (Timestamp
(Millisecond, None)) rather than self.time_unit. The old time_unit guard
would accept a tz-carrying millisecond column and produce a dictionary
value type disagreeing with the output schema; the datatype guard is the
correct check.
Also fix the comment: arrow's try_unary is a fallible kernel that LLVM
cannot auto-vectorize; the win over the hand-written loop comes from
eliminating the per-sample Option/Vec and branches, not SIMD.
Add a regression test with a timezone-carrying millisecond index to
prove it falls back to the try_unary path.
Signed-off-by: discord9 <55937128+discord9@users.noreply.github.com>
* perf(promql): replace try_unary with unary + Cell overflow flag
Arrow's try_unary is a fallible kernel that LLVM cannot auto-vectorize.
Replace it with the infallible unary kernel: the closure is a plain
i64 -> i64 mapping that sets a Cell<bool> on overflow instead of
returning Err per sample. The flag is checked once after the loop.
This removes the per-lane Result construction and lets LLVM vectorize
the shift+truncate sequence. Bench (N=4096, 15s cadence):
- window4x15s: 42.12us -> 28.77us (-32%)
- window20x15s: 48.98us -> 27.68us (-43%)
- window240x15s: 102.44us -> 27.61us (-73%)
- regular_sparse: 90.04us -> 29.20us (-68%)
All cases now run at ~27-29us regardless of window size; the zero-copy
path dominates for ms+offset=0.

* perf(promql): dispatch payload conversion on null_count; drop wall-time bench
Null-free batches (dominant PromQL case) take arrow's vectorizable unary
kernel with a Cell<bool> overflow flag; nullable batches take try_unary so
a NULL slot's arbitrary underlying value cannot raise a false batch-wide
overflow error. Add a regression test exercising both paths.
Remove bench_range_manipulate_wall_time (all-ms zero-offset cases only
exercised the zero-copy path, measuring nothing about the conversion) and
its orphaned helpers; restore the cursor-scan bench helpers it shared.
Signed-off-by: discord9 <55937128+discord9@users.noreply.github.com>
* fix(promql): keep nullable timestamp cursor scans on i128
NULL slots may contain unordered arbitrary values, so the endpoint-only
narrow-scan proof cannot bound their interior timestamp arithmetic. Both
range and instant scans now attempt i64 only for null-free timestamp arrays
and otherwise retain the existing exact i128 path.
Add focused interior-NULL regressions through both active entrypoints,
checking concrete selections and output against the existing wide scan.
The null-free fast path and timestamp payload conversion are unchanged.

for instant queries. Prometheus uses the evaluation interval, one minute
by default.

* fix(promql): follow IEEE 754 float semantics in comparisons and aggregations (#9479)
* fix(promql): follow IEEE 754 float semantics in operators and aggregations
- Comparisons: Arrow orders floats totally (NaN == NaN, NaN > +Inf); PromQL
comparisons with NaN are false except !=.
- min/max: skip NaN unless the whole group is NaN. DataFusion's grouped
min/max let NaN replace and be replaced by neighbours, so the result
depended on input order.
- topk/bottomk rank NaN last.
- round() rounds ties up and returns NaN for a zero step, like Prometheus.
- sqrt() of a negative number is NaN instead of an error.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix(promql): round() without a step rounds to integers
The planner passed a zero step for single-argument round(), which now
yields NaN like Prometheus; pass 1 instead. Found by the compatibility harness.

* fix(promql): apply the sqrt guard to builtin functions and register min/max for plan decoding
sqrt resolves through the session's builtin functions, not the UDF branch.
Distributed plans are decoded with the serializer's session, which did not
know prom_min/prom_max.

* test(promql): cover NaN and rounding semantics

* fix(promql): keep the nested count rewrite for PromQL min/max
count(min(x) by (l)) was rewritten by count_nest_aggr only for the builtin
min/max names. prom_min/prom_max return NULL for the same groups, so the
rewrite stays valid. Update plan snapshots for the IEEE comparison, sqrt,
topk and min/max changes.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix(promql): register prom_min/prom_max in the function registry
Distributed plans split an aggregation into state and merge steps only for
functions whose state function exists in FUNCTION_REGISTRY; prom_min and
prom_max lived in the promql crate, so min/max stopped being pushed down to
datanodes. Move them to common-function and register them before the state
functions are derived.

* test: update sqlness results for PromQL float semantics
Plans and column names now show prom_min/prom_max, the NaN guards of
comparisons and sqrt, and the NaN sort key of topk. round() results follow
Prometheus' formula. Distributed min/max keep the state/merge split.

* fix(promql): keep column names and NULLs in IEEE comparisons and sqrt
Rewriting comparisons as `a op b AND NOT (isnan(a) OR isnan(b))` changed
TQL output column names and turned NULL operands into true for `!=` and
false for the bool forms. Implement comparisons and sqrt as PromQL UDFs
that propagate NULL and report the column name of the expression they
replace; prom_min/prom_max report min/max column names the same way.

* build: keep build inputs checkout-relative for cross-worktree cache reuse
Two small changes so compilations are byte-identical across worktrees
of the same commit and can share a build cache (mbx, sccache):
- src/common/version/build.rs: derive the workspace root relative to
CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR instead of the CARGO_WORKSPACE_DIR injected by
.cargo/config.toml (an absolute path). The env var remains as an
explicit override for the submodule case; the [env] injection in
.cargo/config.toml is removed so the relative derivation is used by
default.
- Replace three env!("CARGO_MANIFEST_DIR") uses in test/bench code
(servers prom_decode bench + decode test, common-meta test_util)
with a runtime std::env::var lookup, so the compiled artifact no
longer embeds the checkout path.
No behavior change: same files are read, same version info emitted.

* ci: benchmark the object store WAL against S3 from an EC2 runner (#9536)
* ci: benchmark the object store WAL against S3 from an EC2 runner
Add a workflow_dispatch workflow that loads the o11ybench agent observability
dataset into a fresh GreptimeDB container per cell and compares three WAL
configurations that differ only in [wal]: Raft Engine with sync_write on the
instance store, and the object store WAL in durable and enqueued mode, with
the data files on S3 in the runner's region for all three. Rounds alternate
the configuration order. A summary reports rows per second, D/R and E/R as
the geometric mean over rounds, append acknowledgement p50 and p99, and the
object store WAL counters. A smoke mode runs the same chain on ubuntu-latest
against the MinIO fixture.

* ci: scrape WAL metrics on failed loads and keep logic out of the benchmark YAML
Scrape the object store WAL metrics before stopping a cell's server whether
the load succeeded or failed, so failed cells keep their stall, poison and
create failure counters. Build the summary from the plan so that cells which
never ran are listed and leave their ratios undefined. Move budget, region,
runtime image, manifest and credential scan logic from the workflow into the
helper scripts, and drive the cell lifecycle in the tests through fake docker
and curl binaries.

* ci: fail a benchmark cell whose metrics scrape fails and zero untouched WAL counters
A load that succeeds without its metrics scrape now fails the cell with exit
code 4 and records metrics_scraped in cell.json. The summary reports an
event counter that never registered as zero when the cell is an object store
WAL cell whose scrape succeeded and created objects, and as unknown otherwise.
Planned cells that never ran are read through the same path as recorded ones.

* ci: register the S3 benchmark workflow for dispatch from its branch
A workflow_dispatch workflow can only be dispatched once GitHub has
registered it, which happens on the default branch or when one of its

runs only for workflow_dispatch, so a push run skips every job.

* ci: delete the benchmark S3 prefix one object at a time
boto3 now sends a CRC checksum instead of Content-MD5 with DeleteObjects,

* ci: default the S3 benchmark to c6id.2xlarge

* ci: fail an S3 benchmark run on EC2 without a local instance store
Without an instance store the Raft Engine WAL of the R cells silently stayed
on the root EBS volume, so the run measured a different baseline. Only a smoke

* fix: align fulltext bloom tokens with matches_term and use them for LIKE (#9470)
* fix: align fulltext bloom tokens with matches_term and use them for LIKE
The bloom fulltext index stored tokens that did not follow
matches_term's word boundaries (`_`, ASCII next to Han, Han substrings),
so pruning dropped rows matches_term accepts.
Tokens and query probes now share the character classes of
matches_term, Han runs are indexed as bigrams, and LIKE patterns use the
same probes. The bloom blob is written under a new key; blobs from older
versions are no longer probed. Tantivy no longer serves matches_term.

The manifest records the fulltext bloom version per column, so ADMIN
BUILD_INDEX now rebuilds SSTs whose bloom index predates the current
tokens, and ssts_index_meta shows the version.
Case-insensitive bloom indexes also store the tokens of the whole
lowercased text for rows where it can differ (U+0130, U+212A, sigma),
so matches_term(lower(col), ..) and lower(col) LIKE .. use the index.

* fix(query): accept narrowed nullability in MergeScan remote schema check (#9592)
On append-mode tables a region reports an exact row count. When it is
zero, DataFusion's AggregateStatistics replaces the region-side
__min_state/__max_state aggregate with a non-null struct literal, so the
remote stream advertises the state column as non-nullable. The MergeScan
schema check required equal nullability and failed the query.
Accept a remote field that is non-nullable where the expected field is
nullable, matching DataFusion's own physical-plan schema invariant.
Batches are already rebuilt with the expected schema. Widening is still
rejected, and nested field nullability is still compared exactly as part
of the data type.

* fix(table): stop claiming exact null and distinct counts for append scans (#9593)
RegionScanExec reported null_count = 0 and distinct_count = total_rows for
every column of an append-only table. DataFusion answers count(col) and
count(DISTINCT col) from these statistics, so both returned the row count.
Keep the exact row count and an exact zero null count for non-nullable
columns, so count(*) is still answered from statistics.

fix: bound decompressed request size and close memory-admission gaps for compressed requests (#9264)
* fix: bound decompressed request size and close memory-admission gaps for compressed requests
The request-memory accounting only bounds and charges the encoded bytes on
the wire, but a compressed body can expand far beyond that during
decompression, so tiny requests could allocate disproportionate frontend
memory before any protobuf validation or quota charge.
- Handler-level decompression (Prometheus remote read/write v1+v2, Loki)
now enforces a hard 512 MiB decoded-size cap, checked before any output
buffer is allocated, and charges the decoded bytes to the shared
ServerMemoryLimiter, holding the permits for the lifetime of the
decompressed buffer.
- gRPC requests with transport compression reserve the configured
max_recv_message_size before tonic decompresses, so the decoding phase
is admitted against max_in_flight_write_bytes; the later per-message
charge is skipped to avoid double accounting.
- The HTTP memory-limit middleware keeps its upfront Content-Length charge
but now also accounts the bytes actually streamed beyond it, so chunked
requests and understated Content-Length headers no longer bypass the
aggregate quota.
- Routes that decompress request bodies via RequestDecompressionLayer
(InfluxDB, OTLP, Loki, Splunk, Elasticsearch, pipelines, dashboards)
now charge the decompressed bytes as handlers consume them: the global
middleware marks Content-Encoding requests, and a route-local
accounting layer inside the decompression layer charges the decoded
stream. Plain requests are skipped to avoid double-counting.
* fix: address review comments on memory admission guard lifetimes and 429 mapping
- Retain the gRPC pre-decode reservation for the whole request: the
extensions holding the guard were dropped when the request was consumed
(into_inner), releasing the reservation while per-message charges
stayed skipped. Both the unary and streaming handlers now clone and
hold the reservation marker for the duration of request handling.
- Retain the HTTP body permits across the handler: the AccountedBody
wrapper and the request extensions are dropped once the extractors
finish collecting the body, before the handler is done with the decoded
data. Both accounting middlewares now keep their own accounting handle
alive across next.run(req).await.
- Return a ChargedBuffer from the Loki snappy decompressor so the
reservation outlives the decompressed bytes through the caller's
protobuf decoding, matching the Prometheus path.
- Map mid-stream quota exhaustion to 429 instead of the generic body
error (400): the accounting flags exhaustion and the middlewares
rewrite the extractor rejection, so clients can distinguish
backpressure from malformed input.
* fix: resolve the in-flight body acquisition before trying a new one
A parked acquisition in AccountedBody::charge always belongs to the
currently buffered frame, so it must be resolved before any new
acquisition is tried. Letting the fast-path try_acquire succeed while a
waiter is parked left the waiter alive, and its late completion would
then be credited with a later frame's byte count, under-reserving memory
relative to what was marked charged.
Adds a regression test that reproduces the misattribution: with the
buggy ordering the test delivers a body the quota cannot cover; with the
fix the over-quota frame waits for its own acquisition and times out.

* feat: allow customized time index unit for metric engine table
* test: provide query tests
* refactor: revert unnecessary change
* refactor: share timestamp unit conversions in api helper
Address review feedback on the time index unit changeset:
- Add shared timestamp_unit/timestamp_datatype helpers to api::helper
(the only crate that sees both proto ColumnDataType and TimeUnit due
to layering; common-time and datatypes have no greptime-proto dep).
This removes the ColumnDataType -> TimeUnit match duplicated between
operator's insert path and the OTLP logs path.
- Collapse the two TimeUnit <-> ValueData matches in
convert_timestamp_value_data by reusing api::helper::to_grpc_value
for the construction side.
- Note that convert_rows_time_unit rewrites the schema before the
values, so an overflow mid-batch leaves the request half-converted;
harmless because the error aborts the whole insert request.

* fix: align time units per destination table and floor remote-read timestamps
Address review feedback on PR #9236:
- Align each metric insert request to the unit of the table it actually
targets: an existing logical table keeps its own unit (it may be bound
to a different physical table than the one selected by the request),
and only new tables use the selected physical table's unit. The
previous blanket conversion rewrote valid millisecond samples to the
selected physical table's unit and the engine rejected them.
Regression test: writing an existing millisecond logical table and a
new table in one request that selects a microsecond physical table.
- Remote read now floors narrowing timestamp conversions towards
negative infinity (div_euclid), consistent with
Timestamp::convert_to on the ingestion path; arrow's cast truncates
towards zero and returned -1ms for a stored -1001us. Widening
(second -> millisecond) keeps the exact arrow cast. Regression test:
a negative, non-aligned timestamp round-trips as -2ms.

* perf: fold time unit alignment into existing table lookups
Address review feedback on PR #9236:
- The per-destination unit alignment no longer runs its own pass of
table lookups: create_or_alter_tables_on_demand gains an
align_time_index_unit parameter (metric engine path only) and
converts each request inside the lookups it already performs —
existing tables to their own unit, new tables to the selected
physical table's. Default ingest paths now issue zero additional
catalog lookups compared to main; the separate alignment pass remains
only in the opt-in logical batcher pre-gate, next to the eligibility
check that already looks up the same tables.
- convert_rows_time_unit indexes the time index position directly
(validate_column_count_match guarantees row widths) instead of
Optional get_mut; the gate-side alignment validates widths itself.

* perf: resolve the batcher time index guard once per write target
All batches of one remote write request share the same write target
(catalog, schema, physical table), so the batcher time index guard now
resolves each distinct target once instead of once per batch.
Signed-off-by: Ning Sun <sunning@greptime.com>
* feat: support non-millisecond time index units in the logical batcher
Make the logical table batcher's bulk encode path unit-aware so physical
metric tables with a non-millisecond time index (e.g. TIMESTAMP(6)) can
use logical batching instead of falling back to the ordinary insert path.
- rows_to_aligned_record_batch builds the time index column in the
TARGET schema's unit, converting any timestamp encoding via
Timestamp::convert_to (flooring on narrowing, consistent with the
ordinary insert path).
- New tables created by the batcher use the selected physical table's
time index unit (resolved once per submit; a missing physical table
keeps the millisecond auto-create default).
- columns_taxonomy and the can_batch_metric_rows schema whitelist accept
any timestamp unit; the prometheus remote write v1/v2 batcher gates
and the OTLP pre-gate alignment are removed together with
Inserter::align_metric_row_inserts_time_unit, as the batcher now
converts internally.

* fix: address review comments
* fix: address review issue
* refactor: drop the OTLP pre-gate unit alignment made redundant by the bulk path
The main merge of #9236 (squash) resurrected the OTLP pre-gate
alignment and Inserter::align_metric_row_inserts_time_unit, which this
branch had removed. Drop them again:
- The pre-gate existed because the #9236-era bulk eligibility gate only
accepted millisecond schemas, so nanosecond-encoded OTLP requests had
to be converted before the check. This branch makes the bulk path
unit-aware (the gate accepts all time index units and batch alignment
converts each request to its destination's unit), so the pre-gate is
redundant and only added N+1 catalog lookups per batched request —
the very lookup-count overhead raised in the #9236 review.
- The per-destination unit semantics it implemented remain enforced in
the two paths that need them: the ordinary insert path
(create_or_alter_tables_on_demand converts inside its existing table
lookups) and the batched path (batch alignment resolves each
destination schema and converts to it).
test_otlp_logical_batcher_alignment (the test the pre-gate originally
fixed) and the mixed-physical-table regression both pass without it.
Signed-off-by: Ning Sun <sunning@greptime.com>
* test: cover OTLP batcher cross-physical fallback and nanosecond physical
Extend the logical batcher integration coverage for the cases
previously guarded by the removed OTLP pre-gate alignment:
- test_otlp_logical_batcher_fallback_for_cross_physical_destination:
with the batcher enabled, an OTLP request targeting an existing
logical table bound to another physical table must NOT enter the
batcher (the bulk eligibility check rejects the destination binding)
and the ordinary insert path must convert it to the destination's
unit (60s -> 60_000_000us).
- test_otlp_logical_batcher_non_millisecond_physical_table now covers
both microsecond and nanosecond physical tables (parameterized),
asserting batcher submissions and unit-precise stored values.
Signed-off-by: Ning Sun <sunning@greptime.com>
* fix: validate per-batch physical bindings and avoid intermediate timestamp buffers
Address review feedback on PR #9346:
- accepts_bulk_destinations dedupes on (schema, table, selected physical)
instead of (schema, table): one request can select different physical
tables per batch (per-series x_greptime_physical_table labels), and the
old key let a second selection skip validation and flush rows through
the wrong physical's regions. Missing tables additionally reject
conflicting physical selections within the same request. Regression
test covers an existing destination, a missing destination, and a
consistent selection (which must still batch).
- The timestamp column builder appends each value directly into the
target-unit Arrow builder; values already in the target unit (the
unchanged millisecond fast path) are appended without conversion, so
the default millisecond physical pays no Timestamp construction or
intermediate Vec allocation.
- The non-millisecond batching tests assert the submit_build_and_align
counter, which increments on every batcher submission in both
acknowledgement modes, so a silent fallback to ordinary insertion
fails the tests instead of passing on stored values alone.

* test: cut integration test time and make the storage matrix meaningful
tests-integration is ~85% of workspace test CPU, and 81% of that is the
S3/S3WithCache variants of the HTTP and gRPC suites. Those suites do not
touch the object store: of the 70 matrix HTTP tests only one flushed and
read back an SST, so the matrix was paying real AWS round trips to
re-prove protocol parsing.
- Point the PR CI object-store matrix at the MinIO already started by
tests-integration/fixtures. Three GT_S3_* consumers did not read
GT_S3_ENDPOINT_URL and would have hit real AWS with MinIO credentials;
they now do.
- Add a nightly Linux job against real AWS S3, and pass GT_S3_* into the
release integration-test container. The release previously ran every
remote-backend case as a skip and only exercised the file backend.
- Give each S3WithCache test its own read cache directory. They shared
/tmp/greptimedb_cache, which the datanode wipes on startup, so a
starting test deleted the read cache of a running one.
- Add flush -> read-back assertions to the tests whose columns have a
non-trivial SST representation: JSON/JSON2 columns, native histograms,
metric-engine logical tables, and tables carrying fulltext or skipping
indexes whose puffin files only exist after a flush.
- Move eight tests that create no table out of the storage matrix.
- Make the event recorder flush interval a constructor parameter and
shorten it in the event tests, which otherwise wait a 5s window per DDL
they assert on. It is skipped by serde and never reaches config files.
- Drop duplicates: test_grpc_zstd_compression was a verbatim copy of
test_grpc_message_size_ok and is now rewritten to assert the negotiated
grpc-encoding; test_execute_copy_to_{s3,oss,gcs,azblob} were strict
prefixes of their copy_from siblings; two standalone/distributed event
test pairs shared one assertion body.
- Fix and un-ignore stddev_by_label. stddev_pop merges partial aggregates
in a parallelism-dependent order, so its last digits are unstable; the
test now compares values with a tolerance.
- Rebase the jaeger v1 fixture on the current instant. It carries
ttl=7d with 2025 timestamps, so its rows were only readable as long as
they stayed in the memtable.

* test: address review — wire nightly real-S3 job into check-status, keep the short event interval
The nightly `check-status` job did not depend on the new real-S3 job, so a

In database_ddl_event the short interval was set by a first
`with_event_recorder_options` call and then overwritten by the pre-existing
one, which carries `..Default::default()`. Merged into a single call.

* fix(prometheus): honor label matchers in __name__ values query
`/api/v1/label/__name__/values?match[]={pod="abc"}` dropped every matcher
other than `__name__` and returned all metrics in the schema. No error,
just the wrong list. Grafana's metrics browser sends this request, so
picking a label value there did nothing.
Selectors that only constrain `__name__` keep answering from table
metadata. A selector constraining an ordinary label now goes to the data:
scan each metric engine physical table for distinct `__table_id` in the
time range, map the ids back to metric names, then apply the selector's
own `__name__` matchers.
Only metric engine tables are covered; other engines share no column space
to scan.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* refactor(prometheus): batch-resolve metric names by table id
Building a full table-id-to-name map meant walking every table in the
schema and holding all of them in memory, just to name the handful the
scan returned. Use `tables_by_ids` instead — one batch KV read over the
ids the scan actually produced.
The catalog walk stays, but only to find the physical tables to scan.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix(promql): read an absent label as the empty string
A matcher on a label the series does not carry only worked when the table
had no column for it at all. Where the column exists but is NULL on that
row -- the norm for logical metrics sharing a metric engine physical
table, which holds the union of their label columns -- three-valued logic
dropped the row, so `host!="host1"` and `host=""` missed every metric
without a host label.
Coalesce nullable string label columns to "" for matchers that accept the
empty string, rather than only for the OTLP temporality marker. Equality
matchers are untouched; they cannot match NULL either way.
This is the Prometheus compatibility fix#8970 deliberately kept out of
its own scope. The cost is visible in the regex sqlness plan: the
predicate becomes a CASE, so the scan loses its LastRow selector and
grows a FilterExec. Only negative and empty-accepting matchers pay it.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix(promql): don't panic on pre-epoch label value bounds
`rewrite_label_values_query` unwrapped `duration_since(UNIX_EPOCH)`, which
returns an error for an instant before the epoch. `start=1969-12-31T23:59:59Z`
parses as valid RFC3339, so the request panicked instead of answering.
Recover the sign from the error branch, and report a value beyond i64
milliseconds as an error rather than wrapping the cast.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* refactor(prometheus): drop applicable_matchers, share the distinct scan
With the planner reading an absent label as empty, the frontend no longer
needs to pre-filter matchers per physical table. Removing that exposed a
second problem: a physical table that never took a column from a logical
table exposes no `__table_id`, and projecting it failed the whole request.
Skip those tables; the only thing that can miss is a metric with no labels.
Also pulls out the plan-build-execute-collect sequence the two label value
scans had in common.

* fix(pipeline): coalesce concurrent pipeline cache misses
The pipeline cache reads with a plain `moka::sync::Cache::get` and falls
through to a distributed query on a miss, so when the 10s TTL expires every
in-flight write request on a frontend issues its own scan of the single-region
`greptime_private.pipelines` table. Concurrent scans per expiry scale with
write QPS, and every frontend's burst lands on the same datanode. A user
running high-throughput ingestion through a pipeline saw that datanode
overloaded.
Switch to `moka::future::Cache::try_get_with` so concurrent misses on the same
key share one loader. This requires a single-key lookup, so cache entries are
now keyed by the requested schema rather than the schema the pipeline is stored
under; resolving a request to a stored schema stays in the loader, which is the
authoritative path and already handles the empty-schema and multi-schema cases.
A lookup for a schema not yet cached costs one extra read, now protected from
amplification by the coalescing it enables.
`remove_cache` previously only walked the compiled-pipeline cache, so an entry
populated by `get_pipeline_str` alone (the pipeline read API) survived deletion
until it expired. It now walks all three caches.
Also make the TTL configurable as `pipeline.cache_ttl`, default unchanged at
10s. The TTL is what propagates a pipeline change to other frontends, so
raising it trades staleness for fewer reads.

* fix(pipeline): restore cross-schema semantics broken by the new cache key
Keying cache entries by the requested schema dropped two behaviours that the
previous stored-schema key provided for free.
Creating a new version only wrote the creating request's schema, so another
schema on the same frontend kept serving its cached `latest` — an older
version — until the entry expired. Since the whole point of making the TTL
configurable is to let operators raise it, that window is not bounded by
anything useful. Creation now invalidates every schema's `latest` alias for
that name before priming the cache, leaving the version-pinned keys alone.
The failover cache lost its reach across schemas the same way: a global
pipeline (stored under the empty schema) loaded by schema A was cached under
`A`, so schema B using it for the first time while the pipeline table was down
missed and failed ingestion. The failover cache has no loader and so is not
subject to the single-key model of `try_get_with`; it keeps the stored-schema
key and the empty-schema-first resolution.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* refactor(pipeline): drop cache priming on create and fold the sweep helpers
Priming the cache on create saved one read on a low-frequency operation and
cost a concept: entries were written under the creating request's schema while
`PipelineContent.schema` said empty, so the two schemas in play disagreed.
Invalidating the `latest` aliases is required regardless — that is what makes
a new version visible to other schemas — so dropping the priming loses only
the saved read, which coalescing now protects anyway. `insert_and_compile` no
longer needs the caller's schema.
`remove_cache` and the create-time invalidation collapse into one
`invalidate(name, version)`; `None` sweeps only the `latest` aliases, which is
exactly what creation wants. That leaves `invalidate_by_suffixes` and
`cache_keys` with a single caller each, so both are inlined.
Drop the `PipelineOptions` humantime test: `load_config_test` loads both
example TOMLs, which now carry `cache_ttl = "10s"`, and would fail the same
way if the serde attribute were lost. The `toml` dev-dependency goes with it.
The two invalidation tests are now checked to be orthogonal: removing the
version suffix fails only the delete test, and sweeping just the compiled
cache fails both.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix(pipeline): keep failover populated across a create
The `latest` sweep on create clears the failover cache along with the loaded
ones, and after dropping the priming there was nothing writing it back. An
outage between the create and the first read-back left neither `latest` nor the
explicit version with anything to fall back on, failing ingestion — worse than
before, since the previous version's failover entry was swept too.
Creation now goes through `PipelineCache::on_pipeline_created`, which pairs the
sweep with a failover write of the new empty-schema definition. The two must
happen together, so they live behind one method rather than at the call site.
Also commit the Cargo.lock entry for the dropped `toml` dev-dependency, and
trim the comments added over the last few commits down to what the code does
not already say.

* fix(servers): compose OTLP metrics job from service.namespace/service.name
The OTel Prometheus compatibility spec defines job as
"<service.namespace>/<service.name>" when the namespace is present.
The OTLP metrics path only used the bare service.name, so the job tag
diverged from target_info produced by Prometheus-side exporters for the
same resource. Compose the namespace form, and keep not fabricating a
job when service.name is absent.
Behavior change: resources carrying service.namespace now get
"namespace/name" as their job tag value.

* feat(otlp): synthesize otel_resource_info at OTLP metrics ingestion
Ordinary OTLP metrics scatter filtered resource attributes as tags over
every logical metric table, so metrics-only services contribute nothing
to the semantic entity graph. Each request now also projects its
distinct resources into one info-metric-shaped mito table,
otel_resource_info: a fixed allowlist of identity-relevant attributes
under their raw OTel keys (independent of the label translation
strategy and the promote/ignore headers) plus derived job/instance
compatibility columns, value 1.0, and the newest data-point timestamp.
The descriptor is written after the main insert is committed; a failure
there (conflicting pre-existing table, auto-create disabled) degrades
to an OTLP partial_success warning with rejected_data_points = 0
instead of failing the request and triggering client retries of
already-accepted data. A request writing a metric named
otel_resource_info suppresses synthesis. Legacy mode is unchanged.

* feat(operator): otel info-metric conventions with host/container entities
Whitelist the ingestion-synthesized otel_resource_info descriptor via a
new otel_info_metrics conventions map, gated on source=opentelemetry
(the existing gate hardcoded source=prometheus). Its declarations use
explicit descriptive lists instead of descriptive_rest so identifying
attributes of other entities do not leak into service.instance.
Conventions tightened per the Astronomy Shop findings: host identity is
host.id with host.name descriptive only (host.name is not stable across
SDKs and resource detectors), a generic container entity (new entity
type) is declared only when container.id is present, and trace-v1
tables now synthesize host/container from their flattened resource
attributes too. New co-declared edges: service.instance runs_on
container, container runs_on host.

* test(otlp): cover the resource descriptor in integration tests
Covers the descriptor's raw-key columns and info-metric options through
the HTTP path, the namespace/name job composition end-to-end, column
names being independent of the translation strategy, the allowlist
excluding unlisted resource attributes, auto-create after a drop, the
metric-name collision suppressing synthesis, and the partial-success
warning (rejected_data_points = 0) when a pre-existing incompatible
table fails the descriptor write while metric data is accepted.

* chore: cargo fmt

* fix(frontend): degrade descriptor permission denial to a warning
A table-level permission policy denying otel_resource_info would have
failed the whole OTLP metrics request because the descriptor's
permission check ran before the main insert. The descriptor is derived
enrichment: check its permission in the degrade path so a denial skips
the write and surfaces as the partial-success warning, like any other
descriptor write failure.

* fix(otlp): guard descriptor writes with semantic ownership markers
A pre-existing schema-compatible table named otel_resource_info would
silently receive descriptor rows while its missing semantic stamps kept
it out of the entity graph. The descriptor write now requires the
auto-created table's ownership markers (mito engine + signal_type +
source + metric.type=info + metadata_quality=declared) and otherwise
degrades to the partial-success warning; the entity-graph gate for the
otel whitelist likewise requires metric.type=info, so a user table
stamped with only signal/source no longer picks up implicit
declarations.
Also fold the descriptor write cost into the response and surface the
degrade warning through the otel-arrow BatchStatus status_message.
Integration tests pin the full marker set on auto-create and that an
existing owned descriptor keeps accepting writes without degrading —
a missing marker would otherwise silently stop every descriptor write
after the first request.

* perf(otlp): build descriptor rows without the per-resource BTreeMap
Projecting a resource allocated a BTreeMap and then collected it into the
row key, and every attribute was matched against the allowlist by linear
scan. Collect the tags into a Vec and sort once, and match the allowlist
instead of scanning it. Measured on the conversion path: descriptor work
drops 16-18%, from 10.6% to 8.9% of conversion CPU on the worst shape
(1000 resources with 4 data points each), where the cost tracks resource
count rather than data-point count.
Also trims the comments and tests added with the descriptor to what
carries information.

* test(otlp): pin the descriptor permission-denial degrade path
A policy denying the descriptor table must not fail the metrics request,
which the fix in 2401b3dd9c does but nothing covered. Verified as a
regression guard by mutation: moving the permission check back before
the main write makes this test fail.

* test(otlp): keep legacy mode covered after trimming the unit tests
Trimming the descriptor tests dropped the only assertion that legacy
mode skips the job/instance remap and the promote filter. Both alter
the columns of tables already in use, so fold the check into the legacy
conversion test rather than leaving it uncovered.

* fix(semantic-graph): stop encoding column names into composite entity ids
A composite entity id rendered the identifying columns as sorted
`col=value` pairs, so the same identity split into one entity per
signal: a trace table names its columns service_name and
resource_attributes.service.instance.id where a metric table names them
job and instance. One service instance became two nodes with two
parallel edge sets, breaking the walk from a trace to that instance's
metrics.
Render an id as its values in declared order instead, escaping the
separator so components stay distinguishable, which is what single-column
ids already did by keeping only the value. entity_id_attrs still carries
the structured form.
Values alone are not enough for a namespaced service: the metric side
folds service.namespace into job while traces keep the bare name. Add
qualified_by to the conventions so the trace declarations compose the
namespace the same way, per the OTel rule that job is
<service.namespace>/<service.name> or the bare name when the namespace
is empty. A table without the namespace column keeps the unqualified
identity rather than losing the declaration.
Conventions validation now rejects one entity type declared with a
different number of id columns by two sources, which would silently
produce ids that can never match.

* feat(otlp): gate the resource descriptor, and fix what review found
Synthesizing greptime_otel_resource_info creates and writes a table the
user never sent, so it is now off unless
otlp.experimental_enable_resource_info says otherwise. With it off the
request costs exactly what it did before the descriptor existed: nothing
is projected, no table is created, no write and no permission check
happen. Tests run with it on. StandaloneOptions carried no otlp field,
so the whole [otlp] section was silently dropped in standalone mode; map
it through, or the new option (and trace_ingest_chunk_size before it)
would do nothing there.
Renamed from otel_resource_info: the greptime_ prefix marks the table as
engine-managed and makes a collision with a user metric unlikely, which
is what the pre-existing-table ownership check and its per-request
catalog lookup were defending against. Both are gone.
A request may carry data for several graph windows, but the descriptor
folded every data-point time into one row at the newest of them, leaving
the earlier windows with metric rows and no entities. Key the rows by
window as well, and take the times from the data points the encoder
actually writes: it drops exponential histograms, and a resource
carrying nothing else was being described as an entity with no
measurements.
Projecting a resource cloned its attributes once per data point. Nest
the windows under the attributes instead, so they are moved once per
resource, and walk the data-point times through a visitor rather than
collecting a Vec per metric.
Also documents what the two maps key and hold, and lifts the projected
attribute names to constants beside KEY_SERVICE_NAME.

* fix(otlp): skip the descriptor's work entirely when it is disabled
The collision scan over the request's output tables ran even with the
feature off. Short-circuit on the option instead, and update the config
snapshot the new [otlp] section changed.
Also drops the doc comment orphaned by the deleted ownership check: it
had attached itself to the trait impl and described a check that no
longer exists.

* refactor(semantic-graph): drop the expect and name the service identity
The CASE is built through Case directly rather than the fallible
when().otherwise() builder, so the non-test path no longer carries an
expect (architecture-invariants $4).
service_identity returned two same-typed Options that both call sites
destructured positionally; a named struct makes a swap fail to compile.
Also records that id-column order is part of the identity, where the
option docs and the conventions authors will read it.

* fix(semantic-graph): cast duration_nano before the trace-table union
Trace tables written before the signed-integer ingest change hold
duration_nano as UInt64 and later ones as Int64. The calls derivation

so a deployment holding both shapes could not build the plan. The

* fix(otlp): decide exponential histogram acceptance in one place
The resource descriptor mirrored only the experimental gate, so with both
experimental flags on a resource whose only metric is a delta exponential
histogram was described as an entity with no measurements. The encoder's

and the descriptor takes its timestamps through exponential_histogram_value
so per-point rejections drop out too.

* fix(perf): align direct-SST CREATE TABLE with baked index metadata
The offline fixture generator (query_perf_fixture::direct_sst::
build_region_metadata) bakes greptime:inverted_index /
greptime:skipping_index field metadata into the region manifest for
tag/field columns, but create_table_sql emitted a bare CREATE TABLE
without those declarations. MergeScan's remote-schema validation then
failed on any tag/field projection (HTTP 500 'advertised remote stream
schema field mismatch'), breaking direct_readable_sst perf cases.
CREATE TABLE now declares the matching SKIPPING INDEX WITH
(granularity='1') / INVERTED INDEX column options. A round-trip test
proves the emitted SQL is parser-valid and yields the exact catalog
metadata.

* perf(servers): speed up Prometheus JSON response building with ryu and per-series entry reuse
PrometheusJsonResponse::record_batches_to_data spends ~47% of its CPU
in f64::to_string() per sample and ~32% in IndexMap::entry() per row
(60s profile of concurrent query_range workloads, ~800k series).
- Replace f64::to_string() with ryu::Buffer::format_finite for finite
values (shortest round-trip, 3-5x faster); NaN/+Inf/-Inf keep the
previous std formatting so wire output is unchanged.
- Remember the previous row's label vector and entry index; query output
is clustered by series, so consecutive rows reuse the same IndexMap
entry via get_index_mut instead of rebuilding and hashing the label
vector (worst case adds one Vec comparison per series transition).
Also adds a query-regression case (prom_json_response) that measures the
real Prometheus HTTP range API path (/v1/prometheus/api/v1/query_range),
which is the only frontend path that builds the Prometheus JSON response
(TQL ANALYZE formats the SQL JSON shape instead), plus a prom_http query
kind in the regression runner.
Perf (aligned base d90cca4b75, 256 series x 481 points):
- prom_range_2h (JSON response path): 29.31ms -> 21.46ms (-26.8%)
- tql_range_2h_control (non-JSON path): +1.87% (noise)

* fix(servers): keep Prometheus wire format for integral floats with ryu
ryu::Buffer::format_finite prints integral values as "1.0", but the
Prometheus JSON wire format (matching std f64::to_string) expects "1".
Strip the trailing ".0" that ryu only emits for integral values; extreme
values keep ryu scientific notation, and NaN/Inf keep std output. Adds
wire-format tests covering 1.0, 0.0, -0.0, 1.5, 0.1, 1e21, 1e30, 1e-7,
f64::MAX, NaN, ±Inf.

* feat(servers): add signed→unsigned int coercion to OTLP ingest path
Phase 0 of transitioning built-in data models from unsigned to signed
integers (#8793): add lossless Int64→UInt64 and Int32→UInt32 coercion
arms so existing UInt64/UInt32 columns (e.g. trace `duration_nano`, log
`trace_flags`) keep accepting new signed ingest without an ALTER TABLE.
The OTLP ingest path already reconciles every incoming column against the
existing table schema and treats it as authoritative. With these arms,
`choose_trace_reconcile_decision` returns `UseExisting(UInt64/Uint32)`
for an existing unsigned column receiving signed data: the table keeps
its type byte-for-byte and the request value is coerced. No persisted
format is mutated; existing data stays readable as-is. This is the safety
net that makes the actual schema flip (Phase 1) safe.
Only the signed→unsigned direction is supported — the reverse would be
lossy for values above the signed range and is intentionally rejected.
Tests cover both new arms plus an end-to-end log test proving an existing
UInt64 column coerces an incoming Int64 value while keeping its type.

* fix: keep trace v0 unsigned, reject negative span durations
- Keep the frozen v0 data model on UInt64 duration_nano: the signed
ingest compatibility layer only runs on the v1 path, so flipping v0
would break writes into every pre-existing v0 table at mito's schema
check. Pin the schema with unit and integration tests.
- Reject spans whose end precedes their start (or whose duration does
not fit i64) on the v1 path instead of wrapping: new Int64 tables and
existing UInt64 tables now fail identically, rather than storing
negative durations that break the Jaeger query API.
- Extract is_supported_signed_to_unsigned_coercion so the trace and log
ingest paths share one supported-pair predicate and cannot drift.

* fix: clamp negative span durations to zero, revert semantic_graph comment
- Record duration 0 for spans whose end precedes their start instead of
erroring: a malformed span no longer fails the request, and the value
written is always a non-negative, in-range i64 so new Int64 tables and
existing UInt64 tables (via the checked coercion) behave identically.
Durations above i64::MAX saturate rather than wrap.
- Revert the doc-comment tweak on the semantic_graph test fixture; the
file is untouched by this PR again.

* feat(otlp): report the cause of rejected trace spans
When trace-v1 ingestion cannot coerce an attribute value, it falls back to
single-span writes and rejects the bad span. That behavior is correct, but the
OTLP partial-success message only carried `Rejected span <trace_id>:<span_id>
(InvalidArguments)`: the column, the source value, the source type and the
target type were all dropped, so locating the bad attribute required adding a
detailed exporter on the collector side and replaying traffic.
Two places lost the information. `prepare_trace_column_rewrites` built a message
without the failing value, and the span rejection path kept only the status code
from the error.
Coercion errors now name the failing value, e.g.
failed to coerce trace column 'span_attributes.http.response.body.size'
in table 'opentelemetry_traces' from String("") to Int64
and the rejection detail carries that cause. Values are user data, so a string
keeps at most 16 characters, is escaped, and binary payloads report only their
length; the cause itself is bounded at 256 characters. Both truncations cut on a
char boundary.
Failure details now deduplicate: repeats of the same (site, cause) collapse into
one entry with an occurrence count, keyed on the untruncated cause so two
failures that differ past the display limit stay separate. Only four distinct
entries are retained and the rest are counted, which keeps the state bounded no
matter how many distinct bad values a request carries. A fully rejected request
is logged at warn level and a partial success at debug level, since the latter
repeats every export interval; the detail goes out as a Debug field so a newline
in an attribute key cannot forge log lines.
Rejection semantics are unchanged: partial success, same accepted and rejected
counts, same HTTP status mapping.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* refactor(otlp): compare failure keys directly instead of hashing
The dedup identity was a DefaultHasher fingerprint of `(label, key)`, which
bought a fixed 8 bytes per entry at the cost of an import, four lines, and a
collision argument the reader has to make. Entries are capped at four and a
cause runs a couple of hundred characters, so the saving is about a kilobyte
per in-flight request while the column name it avoids retaining is already held
several times over by the request itself.
Compare the strings instead, keeping the untruncated cause as the key so
failures differing past the display limit still stay apart. Labels are metric
label values and always static, so the entry borrows them.

* feat: embed the derivation conventions as data and adopt gen_ai entity naming
Move the co-declared edge vocabulary, the agent-edge vocabulary and the
virtual-destination candidates from Rust consts into an embedded
conventions.yaml (include_str!), parsed once behind a LazyLock and
validated against the entity-type grammar and the closed rel_type set; a
broken file propagates as a plan error instead of panicking. The agent
vocabulary entity types follow the GenAI semantic-convention namespace
as written: gen_ai.agent / gen_ai.model / gen_ai.tool.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* feat: drop the tag requirement for entity identity columns
Entity declarations no longer require id columns to be tag/primary-key
columns; only column existence is validated. Trace pipelines flatten the
identifying attributes (span_attributes.gen_ai.agent.id, ...) into field
columns, so the tag rule locked real trace tables out of declaring
entities while buying no correctness — the read-time derivation works on
any column.

* feat: implicit declarations for well-known prometheus info metrics
Tables stamped signal_type=metric + source=prometheus whose name matches
the conventions.yaml whitelist (kube_pod_info, kube_node_info,
kube_pod_owner, target_info) get implicit entity declarations: k8s.pod /
k8s.node / k8s.workload with name-based identity and target_info's
service / service.instance with the remaining tags as the descriptive
snapshot. The existing co-declared vocabulary then derives runs_on and
part_of from the same rows, so no new edge branch is needed. Explicit
declarations of a type always suppress the implicit one, and the metric
engine's physical table is excluded (it aggregates every logical
table's columns).

* test: cover the prometheus conventions in sqlness and compact the graph cases
Add the whitelisted-info-metric scenario (kube_pod_info, kube_pod_owner,
target_info deriving runs_on / part_of, a non-whitelisted metric
contributing nothing), fold the single-table calls, cross-table pairing
and virtual-node cases into one trace scenario (they exercise the same
union-before-join path), merge the two declaring-metric-table cases, and
reuse one rename probe for both reserved names.

* fix: reject entity id columns without a stable string form
Review follow-ups: the DDL check now validates against the schema and
rejects binary-backed and nested types for identity columns (the
derivation renders ids via CAST to Utf8, so the failure used to surface
only when the graph was scanned); the agent sqlness case keeps its
identity columns as fields to cover the relaxed tag rule end to end;
stale tag-rule comments and a dangling const reference are cleaned up.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix: type-check every entity column role, not only ids
The registry renders scope and descriptive values through the same
CAST-to-string path as ids, so a binary-backed column in any role fails
at scan time; the DDL check is now role-independent (and simpler).
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* refactor: name the code-anchored vocabulary constants
Entity types and edge attributes the derivation code itself anchors on
(service, gen_ai.agent, calls, trace/attribute provenance) become
constants in the conventions module; the rest of the vocabulary stays
YAML-only data. ImplicitEntity is renamed PromImplicitEntity, and the
implicit-declaration path logs each skip of a whitelisted info metric
(wrong stamps, suppressed by an explicit declaration, missing id
column) so a missing graph entity is diagnosable.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* refactor: single-source the graph constants
The graph tables' column names move to common-catalog (the schemas
catalog exposes and the plans operator builds must match column by
column), and the conventions module now carries the complete built-in
vocabulary — entity types, rel_types, provenances and connection types —
with the embedded YAML validated by membership against it, so an edit
drifting outside the vocabulary fails the conventions test instead of
deriving nothing.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix: treat empty identity components as absent
kube-state-metrics emits empty-string labels an entity id must not be
built from: an unscheduled pod's node and an owner-less pod's owner_kind
/ owner_name. Standard Prometheus drops empty labels (they arrive as
NULL and the existing predicate handles them), but other remote-write
agents may keep them, which produced ghost entities with empty ids and
false runs_on / part_of edges. Every identity predicate (registry,
co-declared edges, span endpoints) now requires non-NULL and non-empty
components through one shared helper.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* refactor: tighten the conventions DSL semantics
Rename the co-declaration rule lists to what they are (co_declared_edges
/ trace_co_declared_edges — derivation rules, not a relation
vocabulary), stop overstating the GenAI entity types (Greptime types
derived from GenAI attributes; OTel defines no model/tool entities),
move target_info's descriptive snapshot to service.instance (the
remaining labels are the target's resource attributes, and instances
would write conflicting snapshots onto the logical service), and extend
the descriptor whitelist with the stable KSM sources: container info
metrics (closing the k8s.pod contains k8s.container rule),
kube_service_info (new k8s.service entity type) and the fuller
descriptive label sets.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix: guard entity column types on ALTER as well
ALTER MODIFY COLUMN could change a declared entity column to a type
without a stable string form, deferring the failure to graph scan time;
verify_alter now checks the post-alter schema. Dropping a declared
column stays allowed — the read-time derivation skips the stale
declaration, and semantic options cannot be altered off yet.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* feat: bridge traces and kube-state-metrics on the pod UID
Trace-v1 tables now get implicit declarations from their flattened
resource attributes (otlp_trace_entities in conventions.yaml): the
service identity — replacing the hardcoded fallback — plus
service.instance and k8s.pod, each applied only when its columns exist.
A new co-declared rule derives service.instance runs_on k8s.pod, and
the whitelisted kube-state-metrics pod identity switches from
namespace+pod names to the UID, so the trace-side pod and every KSM
descriptor land on one entity while names stay descriptive. This also
removes pod identity from the multi-cluster same-name collision.
The conventions rejection tests were passing for the wrong reason (a
half-renamed fixture key failed deserialization before reaching any
validation rule); they now assert the specific error each case targets.
Sqlness covers the UID merge across descriptor tables, pod-contains-
container, the k8s.service node, and the empty-uid/empty-node rows
deriving nothing.

* test: cover the OTLP-to-graph chain end to end
One real OTLP export must come out of semantic_relationships as the
zero-configuration chain: service calls service, instance part_of
service, instance runs_on pod (bridged by k8s.pod.uid). Resources
without service.instance.id or k8s.pod.uid derive nothing extra.
Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhuang <killme2008@gmail.com>
* fix: identify k8s.service by UID
Same reasoning as pods: a recreated same-name service must not merge
into the old entity and same-named services across clusters must not
collide; kube_service_info carries a stable uid and nothing joins on the
service's name. Also drop a stale tag-rule mention from the option
validation docs.

* chore: cut duplicated test coverage and redundant comments
The trace service-fallback test collapsed into the resource-entities
test (same synthesis path since the fallback moved to YAML; only the
invalid-explicit-no-fallback case was distinct), role-duplicate and
subsumed DDL cases are gone, the embedded-conventions test is just the
parse (its assertions were decorative), and the YAML section comments no
longer restate the struct docs.

* feat(native-histogram): store counts and span lengths as signed integers
Native histograms are unreleased, so the on-disk integer payload columns
are switched from unsigned to signed types without backward-compat:
- count_u64 / zero_count_u64: uint64 -> int64
- positive_span_lengths / negative_span_lengths: list(uint32) -> list(int32)
- Span.length (query-time model): u32 -> i32
The Prometheus remote-write v2 source carries these as uint64/uint32, so
the unsigned->signed conversion at the ingestion boundary is overflow
checked: an integer count >= 2^63 or a span length >= 2^31 is rejected
with an explicit error rather than silently wrapping to a negative value.
read_spans additionally rejects negative stored lengths to keep the
non-negative invariant sound for downstream `as usize` casts.
The UDAF accumulator's own observation counter (transient aggregation

as uint64.

ZERO_COUNT_U64_FIELD ("zero_count_u64") -> ZERO_COUNT_I64_FIELD ("zero_count_i64")

* test(native-histogram): refresh planner plan snapshot for signed types
The mixed native-histogram range test embeds the full histogram Struct
type in its expected plan string, which still carried the pre-rename
unsigned fields. Update the snapshot to match the signed schema:
positive/negative_span_lengths: List(UInt32) -> List(Int32)
count_u64/zero_count_u64: UInt64 -> count_i64/zero_count_i64: Int64

* feat(servers): stamp prometheus remote write v2 metadata as semantic table options
Remote write 2.0 carries per-series metadata (type, unit, help) that the
v2 ingest decoded and dropped; tables kept the name-based 'inferred'
quality. Wire it into the semantic layer:
- generalize the OTLP per-table semantic index into a shared, schema-
aware servers::semantic module: v2 lets each series override its
target schema, so the index is keyed {schema -> table -> options} and
the same metric name in two schemas no longer collapses;
- into_write_requests records metric type and unit per written table;
an explicit type upgrades the table's metadata quality to declared,
UNSPECIFIED series keep the request-level inferred stamp, and units
are canonicalised from OpenMetrics words to the UCUM codes the
vocabulary is defined in (unknown units are dropped, help text is not
persisted);
- the consumer folds the index in on both auto-create paths: the
operator row-insert path and the pending-rows batched create, which
bypasses the former.
Table options are stamped at auto-create only; updating existing tables
from later metadata is future work (a metadata registry, see the native
histograms RFC).

* chore: trim over-commenting in the remote write metadata path

* fix: parse the per-table semantic index once per create round
The index was re-parsed from JSON for every table being created — a
first write creating N tables (a fleet's first scrape) paid
O(N x index size). Parsing now happens lazily once per create-planning
round, on both consumers: the operator row-insert auto-create (also
serving OTLP metrics) and the pending-rows batched create.
Also validate every non-zero metadata symbol reference up front, as the
remote write 2.0 spec requires: help_ref was never checked, and
unit_ref escaped checking when the metric type was UNSPECIFIED.

* fix(servers): stamp remote-write v2 unit independently of metric type
OpenMetrics models TYPE and UNIT as independent MetricFamily metadata, and
the Prometheus v2 sender emits UNSPECIFIED-type series that still carry a
unit. The early return on UNSPECIFIED dropped that unit, which is
unrecoverable after table auto-create (units are not stored in rows).
Stamp the mapped unit whenever present; the type and the
metadata_quality=declared upgrade still require an explicit type.

* refactor(operator): name the plan-builder source groupings
Review feedback: build_registry_plan / build_calls_plan took anonymous
(declarations, DataFrame) tuples while the caller already grouped the same
fields. Introduce RegistrySource { declarations, scan } and CallsSource
{ service, scan } next to the builders and flow them through the frontend
caller and tests. The frontend-side EntitySource keeps holding a TableRef
(the operator builders stay pure over already-built scans), so the named
structs live in operator rather than reusing that type. No behavior change.
