Yang Cen f7feed48c3 feat(fts): support custom stop-word lists (#3734)
## What

Expose custom FTS stop-word lists in the Python and TypeScript public
APIs, including their standalone tokenize helpers and remote index
creation.

This PR supports concrete string lists only. It does not add file or
LanceDB-table stop-word sources.

## Why

Rust already exposes Lance's custom stop-word list option. The Python
and TypeScript APIs did not pass it through, and local index details did
not retain the full tokenizer parameters needed by index-backed
tokenization after reopening a table.

## How

- Add `custom_stop_words` / `customStopWords` to the Python and
TypeScript FTS and tokenize options.
- Preserve `None` / `undefined`, empty lists, and list contents without
normalization.
- Load the persisted FTS segment parameters when returning local index
details.
- Serialize the concrete list in remote create-index requests.
- Keep Python and TypeScript tests thin; behavior, persistence, query
tokenization, and remote JSON coverage live primarily in Rust.

Yang Cen 9dc5ec03aa feat(fts): add block size configuration (#3691)
## What changed

- add `block_size` to Python FTS configuration and the deprecated
local/remote helpers
- add `blockSize` to the TypeScript FTS options and propagate it through
the NAPI binding
- serialize the value as `block_size` for remote index creation
- document the existing Rust builder API and generate the TypeScript API
reference
- add local, remote, metadata, search, and invalid-value regression
coverage

## Why

Lance supports configuring the number of documents per compressed FTS
posting block, but LanceDB's Python and TypeScript APIs did not expose
the setting. This made the experimental FTS V3 layout unavailable
through those clients and allowed the value to be dropped before index
creation.

## How it works

The default remains `128`. Supported values are `128` and `256`;
selecting `256` uses the experimental FTS V3 format. Invalid values are
rejected by the Lance builder and surfaced as Python or JavaScript
errors.

## Validation

- `cargo check --quiet --features remote --tests --examples`
- `cargo +1.94.0 clippy --quiet --features remote --tests --examples --
-D warnings`
- targeted Rust local and remote index tests
- Rust doctests: 34 passed
- Python Ruff checks, doctest, and targeted local/remote tests: 5 passed
- TypeScript build, Biome lint, generated docs, and targeted Jest tests:
9 passed
- `git diff --check`

## Limitations

The Java client remains unchanged because its external remote REST model
does not currently expose `block_size`.

Will Jones d05fe8ec44 feat(python): unify sync create_index API to match async API (#2882)
## Summary

- Transitions `LanceTable` and `RemoteTable` to use the unified
`create_index()` API matching `AsyncTable`
- Deprecates `create_scalar_index()` and `create_fts_index()` with
deprecation warnings
- Adds detection logic to distinguish legacy vs new API calls
- Adds `@overload` decorators for type checker compatibility
- Adds `accelerator` parameter to IVF config classes for GPU support

Xuanwo cf162c8a10 test(python): cover nested FTS field paths (#3418)
Adds regression coverage for Python FTS APIs targeting nested text
leaves, including sync and async match, phrase, and hybrid query paths.
This also locks in the intended error boundary: nested text leaf paths
are valid, while struct containers, non-text leaves, and missing paths
remain rejected.

Fixes #3404.

Xuanwo 5bfde47a8e fix: support nested field paths in native index creation (#3408)
Native index creation was resolving requested columns through top-level
Arrow schema lookup before handing the request to Lance, which rejected
nested paths and could collapse a nested field to its leaf name. This PR
resolves index targets with Lance field-path semantics, passes the
canonical path through to Lance, and reports indexed columns from field
ids as canonical full paths.

This also removes the Python native FTS guard that rejected dotted paths
so scalar, vector, and FTS index creation share the same nested-field
contract. Related to #3402.

Xuanwo 9b21c136c6 feat(python): support model-backed native FTS tokenizers (#3289)
This wires Lance's existing `jieba/*` and `lindera/*` native FTS
tokenizers through the Python SDK instead of leaving them behind
disabled features and narrow public typing. It also documents the
`LANCE_LANGUAGE_MODEL_HOME` model layout and adds Python coverage for
successful CJK indexing plus missing-model error guidance.

Xuanwo c54888a83a refactor(python): remove legacy tantivy FTS support (#3282)
This follows the Rust-side Tantivy removal by deleting the remaining
Python Tantivy runtime, tests, and packaging references.

It also turns the legacy Python-only Tantivy parameters into explicit
errors and stops reading legacy `_indices/fts` directories so Python FTS
is fully native-only.

Sean Mackrory 39a2ac0a1c feat: add parity between fast_search keyword argument between vector and FTS searches (#3091)
We don't necessarily need to do this, but one user was confused having
used `fast_search=True` as a keyword argument for vector searches, but
being unable to do so for FTS, even after the most recent changes. I
think this is the only discrepancy in where that is possible.

Jackson Hew bb6b0bea0c fix: .phrase_query() not working (#2781)
The `self._query` value was not set when wrapping its copy `query` with
quotation marks.

The test for phrase queries has been updated to test the
`.phrase_query()` method as well, which will catch this bug.

impact in Lance, and I expect a similar impact here.

because we installed the toolchain **after** we called `- uses:

(`pytest.PytestRemovedIn9Warning`)
* Altered `get_num_sub_vectors` to handle bug in case of 4-bit PQ. This
was cause of `rust future panicked: unknown error`. Raised an issue

Will Jones f6846004ca feat: add name parameter to remaining Python create index calls (#2617)
## Summary
This PR adds the missing `name` parameter to `create_scalar_index` and
`create_fts_index` methods in the Python SDK, which was inadvertently
omitted when it was added to `create_index` in PR #2586.

- Add `name: Optional[str] = None` parameter to abstract
`Table.create_scalar_index` and `Table.create_fts_index` methods
- Update `LanceTable` implementation to accept and pass the `name`
parameter to the underlying Rust layer
- Update `RemoteTable` implementation to accept and pass the `name`
parameter
- Enhanced tests to verify custom index names work correctly for both
scalar and FTS indices
- When `name` is not provided, default names are generated (e.g.,

Tristan Zajonc 81afd8a42f fix: use local random state in FTS test fixtures to prevent flaky failures (#2532)
## Summary
Fixes intermittent CI failures in `test_search_fts[False]` where boolean
FTS queries were returning fewer results than expected due to
non-deterministic test data generation.

## Problem
The test was using global `random` and `np.random` without seeding,
causing the boolean query `MatchQuery("puppy", "text") &
MatchQuery("runs", "text")` to sometimes return only 3 results instead
of the expected 5, leading to `AssertionError: assert 3 == 5`.

## Solution
- Replace global random calls with local `random.Random(42)` and
`np.random.RandomState(42)` objects in test fixtures
- Ensures deterministic test data while maintaining test isolation
- No impact on other tests since random state is scoped to fixtures only

## Test Results
-  `test_search_fts[False]` now passes consistently
-  All other FTS tests continue to pass 
-  No regression in other test suites (verified with `test_basic`)
-  Maintains existing test behavior and coverage

Will Jones 5b12a47119 feat!: revert query limit to be unbounded for scans (#2151)
In earlier PRs (#1886, #1191) we made the default limit 10 regardless of
the query type. This was confusing for users and in many cases a
breaking change. Users would have queries that used to return all
results, but instead only returned the first 10, causing silent bugs.

Part of the cause was consistency: the Python sync API seems to have
always had a limit of 10, while newer APIs (Python async and Nodejs)
didn't.

This PR sets the default limit only for searches (vector search, FTS),
while letting scans (even with filters) be unbounded. It does this
consistently for all SDKs.

* Updated `LanceTable` and `LanceDBConnection` reprs
* Add `storage_options`, `data_storage_version`, and
`enable_v2_manifest_paths` to sync create table API.
* Add `storage_options` to `open_table` in sync API.
* Add `list_indices()` and `index_stats()` to sync API
* `create_table()` will now create only 1 version when data is passed.
Previously it would always create two versions: 1 to create an empty
table and 1 to add data to it.

* Refactor index parameters into dataclasses so they are easier to use
from Python
* Moved most tests to use an in-memory DB so we don't need to create so

BubbleCal f9d5fa88a1 feat!: migrate FTS from tantivy to lance-index (#1483)
Lance now supports FTS, so add it into lancedb Python, TypeScript and
Rust SDKs.

For Python, we still use tantivy based FTS by default because the lance
FTS index now misses some features of tantivy.

For Python:
- Support to create lance based FTS index
- Support to specify columns for full text search (only available for
lance based FTS index)

For TypeScript:
- Change the search method so that it can accept both string and vector
- Support full text search

For Rust
- Support full text search

The others:
- Update the FTS doc

BREAKING CHANGE: 
- for Python, this renames the attached score column of FTS from "score"
to "_score", this could be a breaking change for users that rely the
scores

natcharacter f6e9f8e3f4 Order by field support FTS (#1132)
This PR adds support for passing through a set of ordering fields at
index time (unsigned ints that tantivity can use as fast_fields) that at
query time you can sort your results on. This is useful for cases where
you want to get related hits, i.e by keyword, but order those hits by
some other score, such as popularity.

I.e search for songs descriptions that match on "sad AND jazz AND 1920"
and then order those by number of times played. Example usage can be
seen in the fts tests.

Ayush Chaurasia b5326d31e9 fix(python): Few fts patches (#1039)
1. filtering with fts mutated the schema, which caused schema mistmatch
problems with hybrid search as it combines fts and vector search tables.
2. fts with filter failed with `with_row_id`. This was because row_id
was calculated before filtering which caused size mismatch on attaching
it after.
3. The fix for 1 meant that now row_id is attached before filtering but
passing a filter to `to_lance` on a dataset that already contains
`_rowid` raises a panic from lance. So temporarily, in case where fts is
used with a filter AND `with_row_id`, we just force user to using the
duckdb pathway.

Weston Pace 2cec2a8937 feat: add a basic async python client starting point (#1014)
This changes `lancedb` from a "pure python" setuptools project to a
maturin project and adds a rust lancedb dependency.

The async python client is extremely minimal (only `connect` and
`Connection.table_names` are supported). The purpose of this PR is to
get the infrastructure in place for building out the rest of the async
client.

Although this is not technically a breaking change (no APIs are
changing) it is still a considerable change in the way the wheels are
built because they now include the native shared library.
