Vlad Lazar 3a4ebfb95d test: fix test_pageserver_recovery flakyness (#7207)
## Problem
We recently introduced log file validation for the storage controller.
The heartbeater will WARN when it fails
for a node, hence the test fails.

Closes https://github.com/neondatabase/neon/issues/7159

## Summary of changes
* Warn only once for each set of heartbeat retries
* Allow list heartbeat warns

Heikki Linnakangas da626fb1fa tests: Remove "postgres is running on ... branch" messages
It seems like useless chatter. The endpoint.start() itself prints a
"Running command ... neon_local endpoint start" message too.

Joonas Koivunen 89ee8f2028 fix: demote warnings, fix flakyness (#4837)
`WARN ... found future (image|delta) layer` are not actionable log
lines. They don't need to be warnings. `info!` is enough.

This also fixes some known but not tracked flakyness in
[`test_remote_timeline_client_calls_started_metric`][evidence].

Alex Chi Z 3fc3666df7 make flush frozen layer an atomic operation (#4720)
## Problem

close https://github.com/neondatabase/neon/issues/4712

## Summary of changes

Previously, when flushing frozen layers, it was split into two
operations: add delta layer to disk + remove frozen layer from memory.
This would cause a short period of time where we will have the same data
both in frozen and delta layer. In this PR, we merge them into one
atomic operation in layer map manager, therefore simplifying the code.
Note that if we decide to create image layers for L0 flush, it will
still be split into two operations on layer map.

Heikki Linnakangas 53f438a8a8 Rename "Postgres nodes" in control_plane to endpoints.
We use the term "endpoint" in for compute Postgres nodes in the web UI
and user-facing documentation now. Adjust the nomenclature in the code.

This changes the name of the "neon_local pg" command to "neon_local
endpoint". Also adjust names of classes, variables etc. in the python
tests accordingly.

This also changes the directory structure so that endpoints are now
stored in:

    .neon/endpoints/<endpoint id>

instead of:

    .neon/pgdatadirs/tenants/<tenant_id>/<endpoint (node) name>

The tenant ID is no longer part of the path. That means that you
cannot have two endpoints with the same name/ID in two different
tenants anymore. That's consistent with how we treat endpoints in the
real control plane and proxy: the endpoint ID must be globally unique.

Kirill Bulatov 8712e1899e Move initial timeline creation into pytest (#3270)
For every Python test, we start the storage first, and expect that
later, in the test, when we start a compute, it will work without
specific timeline and tenant creation or their IDs specified.

For that, we have a concept of "default" branch that was created on the
control plane level first, but that's not needed at all, given that it's
only Python tests that need it: let them create the initial timeline
during set-up.

Before, control plane started and stopped pageserver for timeline
creation, now Python harness runs an extra tenant creation request on
test env init.

I had to adjust the metrics test, turns out it registered the metrics
from the default tenant after an extra pageserver restart.
New model does not sent the metrics before the collection time happens,
and that was 30s before.

Heikki Linnakangas 46d30bf054 Check for errors in pageserver log after each test.
If there are any unexpected ERRORs or WARNs in pageserver.log after test
finishes, fail the test. This requires whitelisting the errors that *are*
expected in each test, and there's also a few common errors that are
printed by most tests, which are whitelisted in the fixture itself.

With this, we don't need the special abort() call in testing mode, when
compaction or GC fails. Those failures will print ERRORs to the logs,
which will be picked up by this new mechanisms.

A bunch of errors are currently whitelisted that we probably shouldn't
be emitting in the first place, but fixing those is out of scope for this
commit, so I just left FIXME comments on them.

sharnoff 4a3b3ff11d Move testing pageserver libpq cmds to HTTP api (#2429)
Closes #2422.

The APIs have been feature gated with the `testing_api!` macro so that
they return 400s when support hasn't been compiled in.

Egor Suvorov e968b5e502 tests: do not set num_safekeepers = 1, it's the default (#2457)
Also get rid if `with_safekeepers` parameter in tests.
Its meaning has changed: `False` meant "no safekeepers" which is not
supported anymore, so we assume it's always `True`.

Heikki Linnakangas 3aca717f3d Reorganize python tests.
Merge batch_others and batch_pg_regress. The original idea was to
split all the python tests into multiple "batches" and run each batch
in parallel as a separate CI job. However, the batch_pg_regress batch
was pretty short compared to all the tests in batch_others. We could
split batch_others into multiple batches, but it actually seems better
to just treat them as one big pool of tests and use pytest's handle
the parallelism on its own. If we need to split them across multiple
nodes in the future, we could use pytest-shard or something else,
instead of managing the batches ourselves.

Merge test_neon_regress.py, test_pg_regress.py and test_isolation.py
into one file, test_pg_regress.py. Seems more clear to group all
pg_regress-based tests into one file, now that they would all be in
the same directory.
