- common: register benches/bench.rs (harness = false). It was never run:
  without a [[bench]] entry, cargo used the libtest harness and found no
  tests.
- common: VInt::serialize into a Vec<u8>, with one-byte values (lengths and
  counts), a mix with a multi-byte value every 16 values, and only
  multi-byte values.
- common: String::serialize into a Vec<u8>, 200 to 2,000 byte strings (long
  messages: a 2-byte length prefix and the text).
- index-bench: index-many-fields, 20k documents with 24 short STRING fields
  added in schema order, which is the shape documents built by a doc mapper
  have.
