Stalwart runs the SMTP RCPT stage while it creates a submission and
records a refused recipient as `delivered: "no"` with its reply: a relay
it doesn't allow ("550 5.1.2 Relay not allowed.") or a used-up throttle
("452 4.4.5 Rate limit exceeded, try again later."), on 0.16 and 1.0
alike. The create still succeeds and onSuccessUpdateEmail files the
message in Sent. Bulwark read only the new record's id and sendAt, said
"Email sent", and on Stalwart destroyed the record right after, the only
trace of the refusal. The message was lost without a bounce.
- the send reads the new submission's delivery status in the same
request (`EmailSubmission/get` by its creation id; the create's answer
has none), before the record is destroyed
- every recipient refused: the send fails with the server's reply per
address, the copy filed in Sent is removed and the user's draft kept,
so the address can be fixed in the composer; held sends (undo send,
scheduled) are refused when created, so this covers them too
- some recipients refused: the others get the message, and a warning
names the refused ones with their replies
- "Send now" and "Reschedule" keep the original when every recipient of
the replacement is refused, instead of cancelling it
- the submission prune leaves a shared account that refuses its records
alone for the session, without a warning: 0.16 lists an account that
only shared an address book or a calendar with the submission
capability
Follow-ups to the review of the push, keyword and identity work:
- A send that names no sender, like the List-Unsubscribe mailto: of the
unified view, fell back to the first identity in server order, which
on Stalwart 1.0 is a group's. It now takes the login's own identity,
with addresses compared regardless of case.
- Re-register creates the replacement subscription before it destroys
the old one, so at Stalwart's limit (15 per account by default) it
failed with `overQuota`. It now frees the old record's place and
tries once more.
- On 1.0 the push settings note goes by the emailpush capability alone
and ignores refusals remembered under 0.16. On 0.16 a group the user
belongs to is recognised by its identity, so a member without
calendars, contacts or files keeps the group's junk filter and is no
longer told the group sends no notifications.
- Plugin imports can no longer set Stalwart 1.0's attachment keywords,
and `keywords.discover` leaves them out.
- Batch mark-as-read showed messages the server refused as read. It now
updates only what was written and reports the rest, and thread
expansion and category-tab moves keep what a partly refused batch
did write.
- Refused read and star changes from shortcuts, the list, the viewer
and Pro tabs show "Failed to update email" instead of an unhandled
rejection. The automatic mark-as-read on opening stays quiet.
- A tag whose id predates the 128-byte limit can have its colour
changed again.
- The state-regression guard notes that a multi-node 1.0 cluster can
trip it harmlessly, at the cost of one extra full fetch.
With directory queries off on Stalwart 1.0, the free/busy list under the
attendees disappeared without a word. The share dialog explained every
`forbidden` from Principal/query with the 1.0 text: "only your groups
and people who have shared with you are listed", and a hint at
Stalwart's sharing settings. On 0.16 that refusal only means the role
lacks the permission, Principal/get then lists everyone, and the setting
has no effect over JMAP.
- When the server refuses free/busy for the user (`mayGetAvailability`
false on the user's own principal, or a lookup refused with
`forbidden`), one muted line says "Free/busy isn't available on this
server". The block stays empty only when the server offers no
free/busy at all.
- The share dialog keeps the 1.0 wording for Stalwart 1.0's own refusal
("The administrator has disabled directory queries.") and otherwise
says "Your server doesn't let you browse its user directory.", still
listing whoever Principal/get returned.
While an event or task uses its calendar's default alerts, Stalwart 1.0
shows those defaults in `alerts` instead of the item's own, and drops
alerts under the default alerts' ids on save. The event editor renamed
every alert to alert1..N and sent them on every save, with the defaults
left on, so on 1.0 an alert change never showed up again, and every
save stored hidden copies of the defaults.
- send `alerts` only when the user changed them; untouched alerts keep
their id and stay exactly as they were
- when the alerts of an item that uses the defaults change, turn the
defaults off for it (`useDefaultAlerts: false`, as the native app
does) and give its alerts ids of their own, in the event and the
task editor
The local reminder engine reads either the calendar's defaults or the
item's own alerts, never both, so the defaults 1.0 fills in do not
fire twice.
Bulwark counted a FileNode as a folder when it had no blobId. Stalwart
1.0 adds symlinks, which have no blob either, so they showed up as
empty folders that could be opened, and folder copies recreated them
as such. Listings now ask for `nodeType` (returned since 0.16.6) and a
single helper, `fileNodeKind()`, decides what a node is in the Files
store, the copy code and the global search, falling back to the blobId
rule when `nodeType` is missing. `nodeType` is never sent in
FileNode/set.
A symlink is shown as an inert row with a link icon. It can be renamed,
moved and deleted, but not opened, previewed, downloaded, copied or
shared, and folder copies skip it.
Stalwart 1.0 lists the folders above a node shared with the user, so
the tree can be walked down to it, but without dates and with every
right false. Bulwark took the owner's top folder for the shared root:
the folder that was actually shared sat several levels further down,
and rename, delete and move were offered on folders where they could
only fail.
Nodes of other accounts with no `modified`, no `created` and no rights
are now marked as placeholders. They are left out of the shared roots,
of shared-drive listings and of search hits; search still uses them to
show the path of a hit below them. 0.16 always returns `modified`, so
nothing changes there.
Stalwart 1.0 reads a text filter value that starts and ends with a
quote as one exact phrase, and a value ending in `*` as one prefix over
the whole string, not split into words and capped at 16 bytes. Every
search path sent the typed input as one `text` value, so on 1.0
`"annual report" 2024 "draft"` became a single four-word phrase and
`project budg*` a prefix containing a space: both found nothing.
`"Q3 planning" budget` lost its phrase on every version.
`splitSearchText` (`lib/jmap/search-utils.ts`) now sends each quoted
phrase and each `word*` as a condition of its own, ANDed with the rest.
The remaining words stay one condition, so a query without quotes or
stars goes out as before. Outer single quotes are stripped from that
part, since 1.0 reads them as a phrase too. The split applies to:
- the search bar, tag views, cross-account and all-folders search;
- advanced search, including the from/to/subject/body fields;
- contact search;
- global search for mail, contacts and calendar.
`inMailbox` and the calendar bounds sit next to the text conditions in
one AND, with one key per condition: Stalwart rejects an operator that
also carries property keys, and 1.0 allows only one AND group when it
expands recurrences.
SearchSnippet/get switches the whole request to exact matching once a
term is quoted, which marks nothing for a phrase ANDed with other
words, so the snippet filter unquotes phrases.
On 1.0 and on external search backends each phrase is now a real
phrase. The 0.16 built-in index reads it as an AND of its words,
without stemming. The dev mock and the demo client now evaluate AND
filters and quoted phrases, so they keep working with the new shapes.
Stalwart 1.0 allows 100 Principal/getAvailability calls per account a
minute and counts every call, however they are batched. The event form
sent one request per attendee whenever the time or the attendees
changed, and showed "Available" for an empty answer, which is also what
the server returns when the user may not see that person's free/busy.
- Answers are cached for three minutes per principal and the local
days the event touches, so moving an event within its day asks
nothing new; the status for the exact time is worked out locally.
- Lookups already on their way are shared, and the principals without
an answer go out in one request, split by `maxCallsInRequest`.
- After `rateLimit` nothing is sent for a minute, and attendees without
an answer show "Couldn't check".
- An empty answer shows "No busy times shared" instead of "Available".
0.16 has no rate limit; it gets the same labels with fewer requests.
Stalwart refuses a push subscription's whole emailPush map as
`forbidden` when it names a mailbox shared by ACL (0.16.16 and later,
and 1.0). Bulwark put every account with mailboxes in the map, so
enabling push showed raw JSON, and the background re-sync destroyed the
working subscription after its refresh was refused and dropped its key:
push stopped without a word and could not be turned back on while the
share existed. A network error, a timeout or rate limiting during the
refresh ended it the same way.
- The map holds the primary account and the accounts that list
`urn:ietf:params:jmap:emailpush`, which 1.0 leaves off ACL shares.
0.16 lists it everywhere, so a refused map narrows to the accounts
that look owned, then to the primary account, as the mobile app does.
Refused accounts are remembered under
`bulwark.push.emailPushRefused.v1.<id>`; Re-register and disable
clear the list.
- A subscription ends only when a verified replacement exists, the user
turns push off, or the server no longer has it. The old record is
destroyed after the new one is verified. A failed listing, a network
error or a refused method call leave it and its key alone.
- PushSubscription/set failures throw typed errors (`jmapSetError` for
a refused object, `jmapError` for a refused call) instead of JSON in
the message or `false`, and the client exposes `getAccountInfo`.
- Settings says that mailboxes others share don't send background
notifications, and `forbidden` and `overQuota` read as plain text in
settings and the onboarding prompt.
Stalwart 1.0 refuses Principal/query and Principal/getAvailability with
`forbidden` unless the administrator allows directory queries, which is
off by default. `getPrincipals` turned that into an empty list with no
signal: the share dialog said "No other users or groups found", existing
shares showed bare ids, and free/busy called every attendee "Not a user
on this server".
- `listPrincipals` says whether the listing is complete, `restricted`
or failed. On `forbidden` it falls back to Principal/get without ids,
which 1.0 still answers with the user's own account, their groups and
the accounts that shared something with them.
- Principal/get asks for `id`, `type`, `name`, `description` and
`email` only; 1.0's default list adds `capabilities` and `accounts`.
- One listing per client, kept for five minutes, serves the share
dialog, recipient autocomplete and free/busy, which used to download
the directory three times.
- The share dialog explains a restricted directory while still offering
its candidates, says when the list failed to load, and shows "Unknown
user" with the id for sharees it can't name.
- Free/busy first reads `mayGetAvailability` from the user's own
principal and stays hidden when it is false or a lookup is refused
with `forbidden`. "Not a user on this server" now needs a complete
listing; failures and `rateLimit` show "Couldn't check".
On 0.16 with the default roles the listing is complete and the dialog
behaves as before.
Stalwart 1.0 returns every photo, logo and sound in a contact card as a
blobId without a uri, including every photo Bulwark saved as a data:
URI. Bulwark read only `uri`, so avatars, the contact list and detail,
print, vCard export and the "has photo" filter showed nothing, and the
form sent `media` without the photo on every save, so editing a phone
number deleted the photo on the server.
- `ContactMedia` carries `blobId`, `label`, `pref` and `contexts`; `uri`
is optional, and `getContactPhotoRef`/`hasContactPhoto` read both.
- Blob photos are downloaded once each, at most two at a time and at a
paced rate, only while on screen, into an LRU of object URLs revoked
on eviction, account switch and logout. They share Stalwart's
per-account budget of 4 concurrent requests and 1000 a minute.
- Avatars look senders up in an index built once per contact list.
- The form leaves `media` out unless the photo changed, and otherwise
passes the other entries through as the server returned them.
- A new photo is uploaded into the user's own account and sent as a
blobId where the blob capability lists ContactCard (1.0). 0.16 refuses
blobIds in media and keeps getting a data: URI; a refusal at runtime
falls back the same way for the rest of the session.
- Print and vCard export download blob media first; duplicate and
cross-account move send the bytes instead of the source's blobIds.
- vCard export also writes photos whose data: URI names no media type
(`data:;base64,`, `data:base64,`), which it dropped before.
Stalwart rejects a whole ContactCard over one property it does not
know, and several reached it:
- the form sent `calendarUri`, `schedulingUri` and `freeBusyUri`,
so any contact with a calendar, scheduling or free/busy link failed
to save ("Invalid property.")
- vCard import sent `source`, and Pro mode left `localAccountId` on
the card
- vCard import wrote addresses as flat `street`/`locality` fields
instead of RFC 9553 `components`
The card now passes through `lib/jmap/contact-wire.ts` on its way to
the server: client-only fields are dropped, the links are written as
`calendars` / `schedulingAddresses` (and SOURCE as a `directories`
entry), flat addresses become components, and reads map the links back
for the form and detail view.
Clearing a field (nickname, notes, a link) never reached the server:
the form set it to `undefined`, which JSON drops, and an omitted
property keeps its value. Updates now send `null` for cleared keys.
Deleting an address book that still held contacts always failed with
`addressBookHasContents`. The delete now passes
`onDestroyRemoveContents`, which the confirm dialog already promised.
JMAP thread ids are only unique within their account - Stalwart hands out
per-account counters such as "b" - so the cross-account views merged
unrelated conversations that happened to share an id, and every
client-side thread map (expansion, cache, loading flag, counts,
virtualizer key) mixed them up the same way.
Give ThreadGroup an account-scoped `threadKey` derived from the email's
source stamps and key grouping and all thread state by it. `threadId`
stays the raw id for Thread/get, which #281 already routes to the owning
account. fetchThreadEmailCounts now asks each source account for its own
threads instead of one client for every id. Single-account views carry no
stamps, so their key is the bare id and nothing changes there.
Stalwart Mail Server strictly validates JSCalendar task properties on CalendarEvent/set and rejects updates containing top-level progressUpdated with invalidProperties (RFC 8984 §5.2.2 only defined progressUpdated on Participant objects, obsoleted in JSCalendar 2.0).
- Omit progressUpdated from toggleTaskComplete in stores/task-store.ts
- Remove progressUpdated from CALENDAR_TASK_PROPERTIES in lib/jmap/client.ts
- Defensively strip progressUpdated in updateCalendarEvent and createCalendarTask
- Make progressUpdated optional in CalendarTask interface
- Add unit tests for task-store and JMAP client task methods
Recurring events defaulted skip:"omit"+rscale:"gregorian" on every rule,
which Stalwart serialises into the CalDAV RRULE as RSCALE=GREGORIAN;SKIP=OMIT.
DAVx5 rejects that ("Invalid recurrence rule"), breaking Android sync. Those
RFC 7529 fields only matter for non-Gregorian scales / invalid-date handling,
so stop emitting them for plain Gregorian rules.
- lib/recurrence-rule.ts: createRecurrenceRule() helper with no skip/rscale.
- CalendarRecurrenceRule.rscale/skip are now optional.
- event-modal + recurrence-editor build rules via the helper.
- demo fixture cleaned; unit test asserts no skip/rscale.
Closes#805.
A delayed send composed from a shared/group identity is created in the
*shared* JMAP account, because sendEmail() passes the target account to
getSubmissionAccountId(). Every read/write on the scheduled surface,
however, asked the primary submission account only:
getScheduledEmails / cancelEmailSubmission / rescheduleEmailSubmission
-> getSubmissionAccountId() // no argument = primary account
So a message scheduled from a shared address is accepted and stays
pending on the server — it *will* be delivered at sendAt — while the UI
cannot list it, cancel it or reschedule it. Cancelling appears to work:
EmailSubmission/set against the primary account answers `notFound` in
notUpdated, which the client never surfaced, and the mail goes out
anyway. Silent unrecallable mail is worse than a failed send.
Stalwart advertises urn:ietf:params:jmap:submission (with FUTURERELEASE
and a non-zero maxDelayedSend) on group accounts as well as personal
ones, so scheduling from a shared address is legitimate.
Data layer:
- getSubmissionAccountIds() enumerates every submission-capable account;
getScheduledEmails() queries each, tags every result with the account
that owns it, and fetches each submission's Email from that same
account (it lives beside the submission, not in the primary account).
It also returns per-account totals computed over all pending
submissions, so a badge stays correct past the first page.
- resolveSubmissionAccountId() locates a submission's owning account so
cancel/reschedule (and the sendAt/envelope helpers) act on the right
one. Callers that know the account pass it and skip the lookup.
- sendEmail() reports the submission's account in SendEmailResult, and
the pending-undo record carries it, so the "Undo send" / "Send now"
toast actions — which know only a submission id — address the right
account directly rather than searching for it inside the undo window.
- The delayed-send gate considers any reachable submission account
rather than only the primary one.
UI:
- Each shared account gets its own "Scheduled" sidebar row, scoped to
that account; the own row keeps showing the combined view. The scope
travels beside the virtual mailbox id, so the store's single
__scheduled__ id is unchanged, and it also drives which row renders as
selected and whether the scoped list has more to load.
Tested against a real Stalwart (integration/tests/11-shared-scheduled-send):
two server-truth tests pin the mechanism (the submission is invisible to
the primary account, and cancelling through it is a silent no-op) and two
UI tests cover the fix. All three UI-level assertions — the combined
list, the scoped row, and which row is selected — fail without this
change.
A calendar holding only tasks (VTODO, e.g. from tasks.org) appeared in the
event calendar UI as an empty calendar. Stalwart's Calendar/get exposes no
supported-component set, so tasks-only-ness is derived from the calendar's
objects (mirroring the existing event/task split): a calendar is tasks-only
iff it holds >=1 object and every object is a task.
- getTasksOnlyCalendarIds scans an account's objects (CalendarEvent/query +
minimal /get), early-exits once every calendar has an event, only marks
after a full scan, and fails open on the cap or any error.
- getAllCalendars/getCalendars annotate calendars with isTasksOnly.
- Such calendars stay in the store for the tasks view (task picker, task-list
grouping) but are filtered from the event sidebar and default selection.
Verified against Stalwart v0.16.16: the tasks-only calendar is flagged, the
default (with an event) is not.
Closes#761.
Fixes#592.
refreshCurrentMailbox merges the refreshed first page with the already
loaded list, appending existing entries beyond a cutoff. That cutoff
was derived from the refreshed list's length - so whenever a folder
shrank, the fresh page was shorter than the stale list and the loop
re-appended the deleted rows from stale local state, despite the
comment right above promising the opposite.
The visible result is the reported bug: after sending a draft, the
Drafts view keeps showing a ghost row for the already-destroyed draft.
The send actually succeeded - resending the ghost delivers the mail
again, which we reproduced with a live JMAP trace: four successful
submissions, an empty server-side Drafts folder, a notFound ghost id,
and five delivered copies. Deriving the cutoff from the page size
fixes the shrink case while preserving the merge's intent for
arrivals and loaded deeper pages; regression tests cover all three
shapes.
Also surface post-send filing failures instead of dropping them, as
flagged in 4dc76bbb's follow-up note: a rejected onSuccessUpdateEmail
patch or old-draft destroy now logs the server's error details and
returns a filingError on SendEmailResult, and the UI shows a warning
toast (all 23 locales) so a stale draft row is never again mistaken
for a failed send. A plugin veto of the send leaves a debug trace.
Rework the sidebar "All accounts" section into a "Unified Mailbox" that, by
default, stays within the active login account and its shared/group folders.
Merging across multiple logged-in accounts becomes an opt-in sub-option instead
of the default, and the standalone per-account "All Mail" virtual folder is
folded into the unified All mail / Unread / Starred entries (its folder selection
now narrows those lists).
Scope:
- lib/unified-mailbox.ts: UnifiedAccountClient.crossIncludedMailboxIds; the cross
views honor the per-account folder selection (union across accounts = the sum
of each account's selection), falling back to inbox+custom when unset.
- stores/email-store.ts: buildUnifiedAccountClients gains scopeToClientAccountId
(the account boundary) and populates crossIncludedMailboxIds from
allMailFolderIds; remove the standalone __all_mail__ fetch/search/load-more
branches.
- page.tsx: scope to the active account unless cross-account is active (per-user
opt-in AND admin gate); the per-role unified mailboxes obey the same scope.
Folding:
- Drop ALL_MAIL_MAILBOX_ID (lib/jmap/types.ts); thread-list source-folder column
now keys on isUnifiedView only; settings folder picker moves under the unified
group and shows once any unified entry is enabled.
Config:
- User: new unifiedCrossAccount (default false); includeGroupInUnified default
flips to true; enableAllMailView retired; the three cross-view toggles now gate
the unified Unread/Starred/All mail entries.
- Admin: new unifiedCrossAccountEnabled gate, default FALSE (cross-account is an
admin opt-in; when off the per-user toggle is hidden and the scope is forced
account-bounded at runtime). allMailViewEnabled deprecated and normalized
forward into crossAllViewEnabled on policy load; cross-view gate labels reworded
to "Unified Mailbox: ...".
Header: the sidebar section shows "All accounts" when cross-account is active
(opt-in AND admin gate AND >1 connected account), else "Unified Mailbox".
Migration:
- Settings persist v5 -> v6 (exported migrateSettings) - cross-active users keep
cross-account; All-Mail-only users get the account-bounded unified All mail
entry with folder ids preserved; includeGroupInUnified enabled for every
migrated config; fresh installs are account-bounded.
- Admin policy: one-shot, marker-guarded migratePolicyUnifiedMailbox (run before
configManager.load) enables unifiedCrossAccountEnabled when a cross view was
active, so existing cross-account installs keep the behaviour despite the
default-false gate. Skipped on read-only config dirs.
Locales: sidebar all_accounts (original label) + unified_mailbox (translated, per
locale) keys; dead standalone all_mail strings removed across all 20 locales.
Docs: FEATURES.md updated to the account-bounded model, the cross-account gate,
and the folder-narrowed aggregate entries.
Verification: tsc clean, eslint clean, full vitest suite green (incl. translations
completeness, cross-view/migration coverage, and the admin policy migration test).
Outlook-Web-style pinning: a context-menu Pin/Unpin action stores a
$pinned keyword on the message (plain IMAP-compatible flag, survives
other clients), and pinned mails stay at the top of the folder list
regardless of age, marked with a pin icon.
Ordering is done server-side via the hasKeyword sort comparator
(RFC 8621), applied consistently to the folder fetch, pagination and
the push-refresh so page windows stay stable. The client-side safety
sort in getEmails mirrors it, and sortThreadGroups keeps threads
containing a pinned mail on top so the client-side thread grouping
does not undo the order.
The new-mail notification in refreshCurrentMailbox now checks the
first non-pinned entry: with pinned mails on top, the newest mail is
no longer at index 0 and arrivals would never have notified.
The toggle reuses the color-tag pathway (routed keyword write for
unified views, in-place local patch), then refetches the first page
so the mail floats or sinks immediately. Search and unified views
keep their existing order.
Pin/Unpin strings are added to all 21 locales.
Add cross-account aggregate mail views and make group/shared (delegated)
accounts first-class in every aggregate view. (The unified mailbox, the "All
Mail" view, and "include group inboxes" already exist on main; this branch adds
the cross-account views and the shared-account correctness work.)
New views (admin-gated + per-user toggle, nested under Unified Mailbox):
- Cross-account "All accounts": All unread / All starred / All mail across every
connected account, including shared/group folders. Each list labels the source
folder of every message.
Source reference on aggregated emails (the core of the shared-account work):
- Replace the overloaded `accountId` with two explicit, always-set fields:
`sourceClientAccountId` (the login the mail is reachable through) and
`sourceAccountId` (the owning JMAP account). `accountId` stays display-only.
- Resolution is branch-free everywhere: pick the client by sourceClientAccountId,
pass sourceAccountId as the JMAP accountId (no-op for personal), read the
owner's mailbox list cached by JMAP id. No capability scan.
Shared/group-account correctness across all aggregate views:
- Route open (click + auto-fetch), thread/conversation open + reply-refresh,
mark read, star, move, delete (account-scoped trash), archive (owner-routed
createMailbox / fetchAccountMailboxes), and spam + undo via the source ref.
- Add accountId params to toggleStar / batchMarkAsRead / batchDeleteEmails /
createMailbox where missing.
- Fix local unread/total counter math for shared folders via emailInMailbox()
(matches namespaced shared ids and bare own ids).
- Keep the unified/cross virtual selection on background mailbox refresh (no
jump back to inbox after deleting in All Drafts/Junk).
Junk UX:
- In "All Junk" the spam action becomes "not spam" in the viewer, context menu,
and list hover icons; undo routes shared mail back to its own inbox.
Admin:
- Policy gates crossUnread/Starred/AllViewEnabled, each noting the matching
per-user toggle (allMailViewEnabled clarified too).
i18n / docs / tests:
- locales (19): cross-view labels + descriptions and hover not_spam, translated
in all shipped languages.
- FEATURES.md + README.md document the new views and group-account support.
- Tests for shared-account routing (single + batch + undoSpam), decoration, and
unified-selection preservation.
