lancedb-gatefixer[bot] c3176a47ce fix(python): report unsplittable IVF partition errors (#3846)
## Summary

- add Python regression coverage for an IVF build that cannot form all
requested non-empty partitions
- verify hierarchical k-means returns an actionable RuntimeError instead
of panicking or silently creating a degenerate index
- exercise the current Lance v10.1.0-beta.1 dependency, which contains
the upstream error-return fix

## Root cause

Hierarchical k-means previously guarded a shortfall in generated
clusters with only a debug assertion. Debug builds panicked, while
release builds could silently publish an index with many empty
partitions. The upstream Lance fix now returns a descriptive error and
is already included in the dependency pinned on main; this test locks in
propagation through the LanceDB Python API.

## Validation

- uv run --extra tests pytest python/tests/test_index.py -q (24 passed)
- uv run --extra tests pytest
python/tests/test_index.py::test_create_ivf_index_reports_unsplittable_partitions
-q (1 passed)
- python/.venv/bin/ruff format python/python/tests/test_index.py
- python/.venv/bin/ruff check .
- git diff --check

Wyatt Alt a6418b6cb9 feat: create_index returns a Job handle (#3742)
IndexBuilder::execute now returns a Job with wait and cancel methods.
Local tables build the index synchronously and return an already-done
job. Remote tables read the job id the server returns from create_index
and track it through the /v1/jobs API: wait polls describe until the job
reaches a terminal state and cancel posts a cancellation. Servers that
return no job id yield a done job, so behavior against older servers is
unchanged. The job id is not exposed on the handle.

The Python and TypeScript bindings keep their current signatures and
discard the handle; exposing Job there is left to follow-ups.

Will Jones 85d870b397 fix: parse RFC 3339 created_at and improve IndexConfig repr (#3558)
The server now serializes an index's `created_at` as an RFC 3339 string
(e.g. `"2026-06-18T21:37:36.637Z"`), but the client deserializer only
accepted a unix timestamp in milliseconds. This caused `list_indices` to
fail with:

```
Failed to parse list_indices response: invalid type: string "2026-06-18T21:37:36.637Z", expected a unix timestamp in milliseconds
```

This PR replaces the fixed millisecond deserializer with a custom one
that accepts both an RFC 3339 string (current server) and a
unix-millisecond integer (legacy deployments), so the client works
against any server version.

It also improves the `IndexConfig` repr in the Python bindings.
Previously it printed only three fields (`Index(FTS, columns=["text"],
name="text_idx")`), hiding the metadata that `list_indices` returns. It
now renders every populated field, omitting any that are `None`. Each
value is valid Python — integer counts use `_` thousands separators and
`created_at` uses the `datetime` repr — so values round-trip. The real
repr is a single line; it's wrapped here for readability:

```python
>>> table.list_indices()
[IndexConfig(
    name="text_idx",
    index_type="FTS",
    columns=["text"],
    index_uuid="aefd3e00-2f95-4bdc-92ac-06de84442bf1",
    type_url="/lance.table.InvertedIndexDetails",
    created_at=datetime.datetime(2026, 6, 18, 21, 37, 36, 637000, tzinfo=datetime.timezone.utc),
    num_indexed_rows=2,
    size_bytes=3_669,
    num_segments=1,
    index_version=1,
    index_details={
Jack Ye 8373318e89 feat: support FM-Index scalar index for substring search (#3532)
Adds an FM-Index — a scalar index over string and binary columns that
accelerates substring search (`contains(col, 'needle')`), distinct from
the tokenized `FTS` index — across the Rust core and the Python and
TypeScript bindings.
## Rust
- `Index::Fm(FmIndexBuilder)` and `IndexType::Fm`.
- `make_index_params` maps `Index::Fm` to Lance's
`ScalarIndexParams::for_builtin(BuiltinIndexType::Fm)`.
- `supported_fm_data_type` validates
`Utf8`/`LargeUtf8`/`Binary`/`LargeBinary` columns.
- `list_indices` round-trips the type (`"Fm"` → `IndexType::Fm`); the
remote wire type is `"FM"`.
## Python
Adds `lancedb.index.Fm`, accepted by `create_index`:
```python
from lancedb.index import Fm

await tbl.create_index("text", config=Fm())
```
## TypeScript
Adds the `Index.fm()` factory:
```ts
await tbl.createIndex("text", { config: Index.fm() });
```
Xuanwo 566b67a634 fix: support LargeList label list indexes (#3529)
## Summary
This PR extends nested-field regression coverage across Rust
local/remote, Python sync/async, and Node so canonical escaped paths
stay consistent across scalar, vector, and FTS index lifecycle behavior.
It also aligns LanceDB's LabelList type gate with Lance by accepting
`LargeList<primitive>` columns while keeping `List<Struct<...>>`
unsupported until Lance defines stable membership semantics for struct
labels.
Part of #3406.
Will Jones 09b1bbc12a refactor!: drop unused loss field from IndexStatistics (#3496)
BREAKING CHANGE: direct Rust users lose the `IndexStatistics::loss`
field. Python and Node.js consumers are unaffected in practice for
remote tables (the value was always `None`/absent), but the attribute is
gone for local tables too.
`IndexStatistics::loss` was local-only — LanceDB Cloud never returned
it, so
`RemoteTable::index_stats` always set `loss: None`. It's vestigial; this
removes it.
- Remove `loss` from `IndexStatistics` and the internal `IndexMetadata`
in `rust/lancedb/src/index.rs`, plus the summing logic in
`NativeTable::index_stats`.
- Drop `loss` from the Python and Node.js bindings (and their
tests/docs).
Xuanwo 2eba7ebd02 fix: return canonical nested index paths (#3413)
Index metadata APIs now resolve stored field ids back to Lance canonical
field paths instead of leaf names, so nested indexes such as
`metadata.user_id` and escaped literal-dot fields round-trip through
`list_indices()`. Native index creation also canonicalizes the input
path before handing it to Lance, keeping local metadata consistent with
the field-path contract while remote responses continue to expose
server-provided canonical columns.
Shengan Zhang 650f173236 feat(python): add IVF_HNSW_FLAT vector index support (#3366)
## Summary
Wire up `IVF_HNSW_FLAT` in the Rust core and Python SDK. The index was
documented at https://docs.lancedb.com/indexing/vector-index but
`lancedb.Table.create_index(index_type="IVF_HNSW_FLAT")` raised
`ValueError: Unknown index type IVF_HNSW_FLAT` — the underlying
`pylance` already accepted it, only the LanceDB wrapper was missing the
wiring.
**Rust core (`rust/lancedb`):**
- Add `Index::IvfHnswFlat` / `IndexType::IvfHnswFlat` variants and the
`IvfHnswFlatIndexBuilder` (modelled on `IvfHnswSqIndexBuilder`).
- Build Lance params via the existing `VectorIndexParams::ivf_hnsw(...)`
helper, keeping symmetry with the other `IVF_HNSW_*` variants.
- Forward the variant in `RemoteTable::create_index` and add two
parametrised tests (default + customised config) for the JSON
serialisation.
- New `NativeTable` integration test
(`test_create_index_ivf_hnsw_flat`).
**Python binding (`python/`):**
- New `HnswFlat` dataclass + backwards-compat `IvfHnswFlat` alias.
- PyO3 `extract_index_params` recognises the `HnswFlat` config.
- `LanceTable.create_index(index_type="IVF_HNSW_FLAT", …)` and the sync
`RemoteTable.create_index` both dispatch to the new config.
- `IndexStatistics.index_type` `Literal` and `_lancedb.pyi` stubs cover
the new type so `pyright`/`make check` stays clean.
- Async integration tests (`HnswFlat` + `IvfHnswFlat` alias) and a sync
dispatcher test, mirroring the existing `IVF_HNSW_SQ` coverage.
- Existing `test_index_statistics_index_type_lists_all_supported_values`
updated to include `IVF_HNSW_FLAT`.
A matching Node.js / TypeScript binding is in a follow-up PR.
Closes #3331
Prashanth Rao ed7e01a58b docs: fix rendering issues with missing index types in API docs (#3143)
## Problem
The generated Python API docs for
`lancedb.table.IndexStatistics.index_type` were misleading because
mkdocstrings renders that field’s type annotation directly, and the
existing `Literal[...]` listed only a subset of the actual canonical SDK
index type strings.
Current (missing index types):
<img width="823" height="83" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f6f29fe3-4c16-4d00-a4e9-28a7cd6e19ec"
/>
## Fix
- Update the `IndexStatistics.index_type` annotation in
`python/python/lancedb/table.py` to include the full supported set of
canonical values, so the generated docs show all valid index_type
strings inline.
- Add a small regression test in `python/python/tests/test_index.py` to
ensure the docs-facing annotation does not drift silently again in case
we add a new index/quantization type in the future.
- Bumps mkdocs and material theme versions to mkdocs 1.6 to allow access
to more features like hooks
After fix (all index types are included and tested for in the
annotations):
Will Jones 91cab3b556 feat(python): transition Python remote sdk to use Rust implementation (#1701)
* Replaces Python implementation of Remote SDK with Rust one.
* Drops dependency on `attrs` and `cachetools`. Makes `requests` an
optional dependency used only for embeddings feature.
* Adds dependency on `nest-asyncio`. This was required to get hybrid
search working.
* Deprecate `request_thread_pool` parameter. We now use the tokio
threadpool.
* Stop caching the `schema` on a remote table. Schema is mutable and
there's no mechanism in place to invalidate the cache.
* Removed the client-side resolution of the vector column. We should
already be resolving this server-side.
Will Jones 33b402c861 fix: list_indices returns correct index type (#1715)
Fixes https://github.com/lancedb/lancedb/issues/1711
Doesn't address this https://github.com/lancedb/lance/issues/2039
Instead we load the index statistics, which seems to contain the index
type. However, this involves more IO than previously. I'm not sure
whether we care that much. If we do, we can fix that upstream Lance
issue.
