lstat SUCCEEDS on a dangling symlink — it describes the link, not the target — so resolveTomlWritePath took its symlink branch and realpath threw ENOENT. That escaped enforceCodexConfigFileMode, which resolves outside any try/catch, and landed in the mirror's catch, which reports and returns before any mirror runs. Nothing self-corrects, so the user's ~/.codex settings silently stopped reaching Codex on every later pass, forever. It also contradicted this module's own guarantee that a failed repair must never break a Codex launch. The catch goes here rather than in resolveTomlWritePath: the writer wants that throw and fails closed on it rather than replacing a dotfiles symlink. Only the mode repair must survive, and it falls back to the lexical path, where there is no realpath to repair and enforceOneFileMode treats it as absent. Pinned by a test that creates a real dangling symlink. The existing `never throws` case points at a path that simply does not exist, where lstat throws ENOENT and the resolver swallows it and returns the lexical path — it looks like it guards this and cannot reach it, because a merely absent path never enters the branch that breaks. The new assertions name the config path and the realpath failure, so they pin the dangling-symlink reason rather than any throw.
