Linus Rath 044647ff34 fix: keep the desktop layout in a half-screen window and at 150 % zoom
A window snapped to half the screen (640-800 px) or a 1366x768 laptop
at 150 % (911 px) got the phone and tablet layout: bottom tab bar,
folders in a drawer, Settings as a phone list with a Back arrow. The
layout switched at the 64rem (1024 px) breakpoint.

Now the phone layout starts below 600 px. From 600 to 1024 px the app
is a compact desktop: app rail at the side, folder sidebar folded to
its icons (the existing collapsed state, opened per session with its
toggle), Settings with its two panes and a narrower page list. Below
840 px the split layout opens a message in the list's place, as the
focused layout does. This holds in the browser and the desktop app,
in the Pro shell (which now runs from 600 px) and under Mountain View.

- `hooks/use-media-query.ts`: classifyWidth, PHONE_BELOW 600,
FULL_DESKTOP 1024; the tablet class (`isTablet`) is gone, the store
has `isCompact` instead. Plugins still see "tablet" for it.
- `app/globals.css`: a `desk:` breakpoint at 37.5rem for the layout
classes, and a `tap:` variant for 44px rows on phones and touch
screens below 1024 px (was every window below 1024 px).
- Touch screens below 1024 px keep swiping list rows (was phones only).
- The boot skeletons, boot script, mail app, sidebar, reader, admin
shell and calendar, contacts and files follow the new widths.

Tests changed with the behaviour: the tablet cases in pro-gate,
mail-app-mv-composer-move, mail-app-compose-handoff,
mail-app-thread-expand-mark-read, mobile-tour-end and
thread-list-item-columns now run on a phone or a compact desktop, as
those widths no longer exist as a tablet. mail-app-short-window-tab-bar
is replaced by mail-app-compact-layout: a phone on its side is a
compact desktop with the rail at the side, so the short-window tab bar
rule is gone. Class and media-query assertions follow desk:/tap: and
37.5rem; the 32px-text test uses 1100 px, since 1440 px at 32px is now
a compact desktop.

Bulwark Webmail is a self-hosted webmail client for Stalwart Mail Server. It talks to Stalwart over JMAP and puts mail, calendar, contacts and files behind one login, with one set of settings and one admin dashboard.

Features

  • Mail: threading, unified inbox, cross-account views, full-text search, Sieve filters, S/MIME, templates, scheduled send
  • Calendar: month, week, day and agenda views, recurring events, iMIP invitations, CalDAV subscriptions
  • Contacts: several address books, groups, vCard import and export
  • Files: Stalwart's JMAP file storage, with previews, sharing and folder upload

All four share single sign-on and 2FA, multiple accounts, 27 languages, PWA install and web push, themes, plugins and keyboard shortcuts. The full list is on the All features page.

There are two editions. The full edition runs as a Node.js server and adds the admin dashboard, OAuth, plugins and settings sync. Bulwark Lite is the same client as static files, served by any web host or by Stalwart itself.

Quick start

docker run -d -p 3000:3000 ghcr.io/bulwarkmail/webmail:latest

Then open http://localhost:3000. A setup wizard asks for your Stalwart server and an admin password. The installation guide has the details, and Stalwart setup covers the mail server side.

Other ways to install

Method Guide
Docker Compose Compose
Behind a reverse proxy or on a sub-path Reverse proxy
From source, without Docker Manual install
Lite on any static host Static hosting
Lite as a container Container image

Updating explains how to move to a new version.

Container images and release files from 1.12.0 on come with a signed build provenance attestation. To check that one was built by this repository's workflows, run gh attestation verify oci://ghcr.io/bulwarkmail/webmail:<version> --owner bulwarkmail for an image, or gh attestation verify <file> --repo bulwarkmail/webmail for a downloaded file. Release files also have a .sha256 next to them.

Configuration

Most installs are set up in the wizard on first launch and changed later in the admin dashboard. You can also use environment variables, which fit read-only or immutable deployments better. When both set the same key, the value saved in the admin config wins, so an environment variable only fills in what the admin config leaves unset.

The contributing guide covers tests, translations, code style and pull requests. Architecture explains how the code is organized.

The stack: Next.js 16 and React 19, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS v4, Zustand, Tiptap, next-intl, Tabler Icons, and our own JMAP client (RFC 8620). Tests run on Vitest and Playwright.

Use of AI

AI tools are part of how Bulwark is developed. A change is held to the same standard whether a person or a tool wrote it: it has to be understood, reviewed and pass the checks and tests before it is merged.

Bulwark itself has no AI features and doesn't send your mail, contacts, calendar or files to an AI service. If your Stalwart server classifies spam with an LLM, Bulwark shows the verdict, but the classification happens on your server.

Contributors can use AI tools too, as long as they use capable, current models and not small or outdated ones. The contributing guide explains what we expect.
